Walshe Secures Gold in 400m Individual Medley
Ellen Walshe delivered a dominant performance at the World Aquatics World Cup in Westmont,Illinois,on October 28,2023,winning gold in the 400m individual medley.Walshe finished in a new Irish short course record time of 4:25.38, surpassing her previous record of 4:26.52 set at the 2021 World Aquatics World Championships.
The templeogue swimmer established her lead during the breaststroke leg (1:14.83) and maintained it with the fastest freestyle split (1:00.26), ultimately defeating Canada’s Mary-Sophie Harvey (4:28.92) and Great Britain’s Abbie Wood (4:31.84).
McSharry Claims Silver in 100m Breaststroke
Mona McSharry earned a silver medal in the 100m breaststroke, clocking a time of 1:04.18. This podium finish followed a series of fourth-place results for the Irish swimmer at the competition.
The United States’ Kate Douglass secured the gold medal with a time of 1:03.14, while Douglass’s teammate, alex Walsh, took bronze in 1:04.45.

This World Cup stop builds on a strong showing for both Walshe and McSharry, with Walshe previously securing silver and bronze medals in the 200m butterfly and 400m individual medley, respectively, at earlier stages of the competition.
