Walz Blasts Musk, Trump at South Carolina Fish Fry
Updated May 31, 2025
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz made a recent foray into South Carolina, delivering two markedly different speeches on the same night. The appearances served to maintain his national profile and push a message of broader Democratic engagement.
First, addressing a group of South Carolina Democrats, Walz presented a more measured vision, offering mild criticism of Republicans.Later, at a fish fry hosted by Rep. jim Clyburn, D-S.C.,Walz shed his suit and adopted a more populist tone.
During the fish fry, Walz again called tech billionaire Elon Musk a “dipshit.” He also spoke against rigged systems and “wannabe dictators and despots,” while condemning the “corruption and the cruelty that’s happening under Donald Trump’s watch.” The Minnesota governor’s role in national politics remains a key focus.
Walz stressed the importance of Democrats competing in every state, not just focusing on swing states. He argued that Republican policies have hurt people in states like South Carolina, Texas, and Florida, and that Democrats need to bring their message to these areas.
“But do you know what terrifies them? What terrifies them is about a thousand people in South Carolina coming out on a Friday night and saying ‘enough,’” Walz said.
He urged Democrats to change their attitude and compete for every seat, from school boards to congressional districts. Walz’s South Carolina visit included a keynote address at the South Carolina Democratic Party’s “Dem Weekend 2025” convention and a speech at the California Democratic Party’s annual state convention in Anaheim.
What’s next
Walz, who unsuccessfully ran for president last year with then-Vice President Kamala Harris, is expected to seek a third term as governor. He has also indicated he would consider a presidential run in 2028,solidifying his political role on the national stage.
