WAN-IFRA Prioritizes Media Literacy, News Literacy Initiatives

The World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) is increasing its focus on media literacy and news literacy, reflecting a commitment to press freedom and ethical journalism. The organization’s General Assembly, meeting in Krakow, voted to include advancing media literacy among its core activities.
An amendment to Article 2 of WAN-IFRA’s statutes now tasks the organization wiht advancing media literacy, especially news literacy.This initiative aims to foster critical engagement with journalism, build public trust, and strengthen the role of self-reliant journalism in a enduring news market.
WAN-IFRA also adopted a Media Literacy Policy, acknowledging the news industry’s obligation in fostering news literacy and building audience resilience to manipulation. News literacy encompasses seeking credible news, recognizing bias, understanding journalistic processes, and applying critical thinking.
As the largest global trade organization for news publishers, WAN-IFRA aims to support its members in proactively driving media literacy initiatives. The organization believes that strengthening news literacy promotes the long-term viability of independent news publishers.
With UNESCO’s support, WAN-IFRA will develop a Media Literacy Training program for news executives. This program, featuring both in-person and online modules, will be offered at upcoming WAN-IFRA events. Additionally, a campaign will promote Global Media and Information Literacy Week, providing resources for members to share.
