China Launches‌ Global Mediation Organization in Hong Kong

Hong Kong hosted a signing ceremony Friday, spearheaded⁤ by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, to establish the International Organisation ⁣for Mediation. Wang said the ⁢new body will move beyond “you-lose-I-win”‌ mentalities and improve representation for the Global ⁤South‍ in international dispute resolution.

The Convention on the Establishment‌ of the International Organisation for Mediation has 33 ⁤signatories, largely comprised of African nations such as Algeria, Ethiopia, and Cameroon.‍ Pakistan, Laos, and Indonesia were among the five Asian countries signing on, along with five ​from latin⁣ America and the Caribbean, five from Oceania, and two from ⁤Europe.

Wang, China’s top ⁢diplomat, stated the organization will fill an “institutional gap” in international mediation and serve as “an vital public good” in the field of law, ensuring better global⁣ governance through peaceful dispute resolution and international mediation.

“The birth of the mediation center will help transcend the ‘you-lose-I-win’ zero-sum mentality, promote the amicable resolution of international disputes and foster more harmonious international relations,” Wang told the audience.

The headquarters for the new organization,‌ focused on international mediation, will be located in the former Wan Chai Police Station and is expected⁤ to open by the end of 2025 or early 2026.

Chief Executive John Lee ka-chiu noted the organization’s increasing importance given rising global geopolitical tensions and protectionism that threaten international trade.
