MOSCOW – Russia asserted Tuesday that its forces had seized control of Rozlyv, a village in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. This claim comes as fighting persists despite ongoing discussions regarding a potential ceasefire.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced the capture, stating that Rozlyv had a pre-conflict population of approximately 1,000 residents.
The village is located roughly six miles from the border of the Dnipropetrovsk region in central Ukraine, an area that Russian forces have not yet entered.
In 2022, Russia declared the annexation of four regions in eastern and southern Ukraine: Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson, in addition to Crimea, which it annexed in 2014.Russia has not, at this time, made territorial claims regarding the Dnipropetrovsk region.
Last October, an AFP team encountered residents of Rozlyv who, despite the ongoing conflict, expressed reluctance to evacuate.
Vassyl and Lilia Prouss recounted having already been displaced three times due to the advance of Russian troops and bombardments.

The potential return of Donald Trump to the White house in January has introduced new uncertainties regarding the conflict in Ukraine. trump has called for an unconditional ceasefire, though he has not yet persuaded Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree.
following seperate negotiations wiht Ukrainian and Russian representatives, the United States issued separate press releases last week, following a moratorium on attacks targeting energy infrastructure.
Though, the releases lacked specific dates or conditions, and both Russia and Ukraine have as accused each other of violating the agreement.
On Tuesday, Russia alleged that Ukrainian forces had attacked an energy facility in the Belgorod border region.
The Russian Defense Ministry accused Ukraine of “continuing to unilaterally and daily” strike Russian energy facilities.
Since 2022, Russia’s offensive against Ukraine has resulted in widespread destruction, particularly targeting Ukraine’s energy grid, leaving millions without power and heat. Estimates place the number of dead and injured in the hundreds of thousands.
In response,Ukraine has regularly targeted energy sites within Russia, primarily refineries and fuel depots, asserting that these facilities supply the Russian military.
Russian Strike Impacts Kherson
A Russian strike on Kherson Tuesday morning left 45,000 residents without electricity, according to Ukrainian diplomat Andriï Sybiga, who accused Moscow of violating a partial truce agreement.
“Russia continues to violate this agreement,” Sybiga said, referring to the fragile compromise announced last week by the United States after separate talks with Ukrainian and Russian officials.
“this morning, yet another Russian strike damaged an energy site in Kherson, depriving electricity [to] 45,000 inhabitants,” he stated during a press conference with his Lithuanian counterpart.
Sybiga also indicated that Ukraine seeks a “mutually acceptable” agreement with the United States regarding mineral resources, following criticism from media and Ukrainian political figures who deemed the previous american proposal unfavorable to Kyiv.
“They are always important to strengthen the presence of American companies in Ukraine and we will work with our American colleagues to achieve a mutually acceptable text,” the minister said.
Kyiv received a revised version of the document regarding access to Ukrainian mineral resources last week. The initial framework agreement failed in February after a verbal exchange between Ukrainian President volodymyr Zelensky and then American President Donald Trump.
The American administration now seeks a new agreement in exchange for ongoing military and financial support to Ukraine.
Trump reportedly warned Zelensky on Sunday that he would face “big problems” if he rejected the new proposal.
