Michigan Extends Warde Manuel‘s Contract, Securing Athletic Success Through 2030
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan has solidified its commitment to continued athletic excellence by extending Athletic Director Warde Manuel’s contract through June 30, 2030. The five-year extension, announced at the Board of regents’ December 5th meeting, underscores Manuel’s successful leadership and the department’s impressive achievements under his guidance.
“During Warde’s tenure as director, Athletics has put a structure in place where our student-athletes compete for Big Ten and national championships, excel in the classroom, and proudly graduate with their University of Michigan degrees,” said President Santa J. ono.
Manuel,a Michigan alumnus who excelled as both a football player under legendary coach Bo Schembechler and a track and field athlete,returned to his alma mater in 2016 after a successful stint as athletic director at the University of Connecticut. As the 12th athletic director in U-M history, he oversees a sprawling department encompassing 29 teams, over 900 student-athletes, a $250 million annual budget, and a staff of 400. Notably, the department remains financially self-reliant and self-supporting.
“I want to express my gratitude to President Ono,Board Chair Kathy White,and the members of the Board of Regents who have been very supportive of me and our athletic department,” Manuel said. “I look forward to continuing the success that we have driven together during this changing landscape in college athletics.”
Manuel’s leadership has ushered in a golden era for Michigan Athletics. as 2020, the university has claimed an impressive 52 Big Ten championships across all sports, culminating in the 2023 Football National Championship.
