Warhammer 40,000 Expands into the Maelstrom with New Campaign and Miniatures

Games Workshop is launching a major narrative expansion for its tabletop wargame, Warhammer 40,000, centered around the treacherous Maelstrom region and the notorious Red Corsairs led by Huron Blackheart. The expansion, titled The Maelstrom: Lair of the Tyrant, arrives alongside a suite of new miniatures and rulesets, promising a deep dive into a chaotic corner of the 41st millennium. Pre-orders begin next week, February 15th, 2026.

The Maelstrom itself is described as a swirling vortex of stellar storms and Warp rifts, making navigation exceptionally dangerous. Within its heart resides Huron Blackheart, a prominent Chaos Lord and master of the Red Corsairs. This expansion details Blackheart’s latest raid into Imperial space, but he won’t be the only faction vying for control of the region. Prince Yriel’s Eldritch Raiders, a force of Aeldari Corsairs, also have their own agenda within the Maelstrom.

A Multi-Book Expansion

The Maelstrom: Lair of the Tyrant is structured as a set of four books bound together in a decorative slipcase. Lair of the Tyrant itself focuses on the narrative of Huron Blackheart’s raid and his encounters with the Aeldari Corsairs. Crucible of Champions introduces new narrative rules for creating custom Warhammer 40,000 characters, allowing players to personalize their forces. A dedicated Detachments booklet expands the tactical options available to players of Chaos Space Marines, Aeldari, Orks, and Leagues of Votann, offering new army compositions. Finally, Raid and Ruin provides a new campaign system designed to emulate the piratical nature of warfare within the Maelstrom.

A Collector’s Edition of the set will also be available, featuring alternate cover art for the books and the slipcase, embellished with red foil details and gilt page edges. Each book in the Collector’s Edition will also include a red ribbon page marker. Availability for both editions is limited to stock on hand.

Huron Blackheart Returns

Central to the expansion is the return of Huron Blackheart, now available as a newly sculpted plastic miniature. The model depicts Blackheart in detail, including his signature Tyrant’s Claw, battle damage, trophies, and his companion, a Barghesi pup named Plunder. He is accompanied by a command squad consisting of Garreon the Corpsemaster, Katar Garrix, Garlon Souleater, Captain Sargotta, and the Enforcer.

The miniatures are designed to be fielded in two distinct ways: Huron can operate independently, joining various units, while the command squad functions as a cohesive unit of specialist warriors, exclusively led by Huron. This provides tactical flexibility for players utilizing the Red Corsairs.

New Battleforces for Red Corsairs and Aeldari

To support the expansion, Games Workshop is releasing two new Battleforce boxes. The Battleforce: Lords of the Maelstrom box focuses on the Red Corsairs, containing 10 new Red Corsairs Raiders, a Reave-Captain, 10 Chaos Space Marines Legionaries, 5 Chaos Terminators, 10 Traitor Guardsmen, and a Red Corsairs upgrade set. The individual kits within this box will be available separately at a later date.

The Battleforce: Eldritch Raiders box provides a counterpoint, featuring Prince Yriel and his Aeldari Corsair fleet. This box includes a new miniature of Prince Yriel, the Void Dreamer Kharseth, 10 Corsair Skyreavers with jump packs, and a Starfang vehicle that can be built as either a Starfang or a Vyper. Like the Red Corsairs box, the individual kits will be sold separately after the initial release.

Battalions for Drukhari and Leagues of Votann

Beyond the core factions, the expansion also introduces new Battalion boxes for the Drukhari and Leagues of Votann. The Maelstrom Battalion: Drukhari box provides a thematic raiding force, including a Succubus war leader, two Venoms, three Reaver jetbikes, five Hellions, and 10 Wyches. The Maelstrom Battalion: Leagues of Votann box offers a compact but elite force of Kin and Ironkin, designed for defending critical claims. Both Battalion boxes contain existing miniature kits that are also available for individual purchase.

The release of The Maelstrom: Lair of the Tyrant marks a significant expansion of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, offering players new narrative opportunities, tactical options, and miniatures to explore the dangers and rewards of the Maelstrom region.
