Warm and breezy weather conditions are affecting Cheyenne County, Colorado, and northwest Kansas, leading to an increase in fire danger across the region during the week of April 13, 2026.

According to reporting from the Kiowa County Press, Cheyenne Wells will experience mostly sunny skies on April 13 with a high near 79 degrees. Southwest winds are expected to range from 10 to 20 mph, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph. Overnight lows for April 13 are forecast to be 42 degrees under mostly clear skies.

While Cheyenne County is not currently under an active Red Flag Warning for April 13, meteorologists have noted that conditions remain dry and breezy enough to warrant caution.

Fire Weather Warnings in Kansas

The National Weather Service office in Goodland, Kansas, has issued a Red Flag Warning for several counties in northwest Kansas on April 13. The warning covers Greeley, Gove, Graham, Logan, Norton, Sheridan, and Wichita counties.

Conditions in these warning zones include southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph, gusts up to 35 mph, and relative humidity dropping to 10 percent.

Forecasters indicate that fire danger typically concentrates east of the Colorado-Kansas border. The Goodland forecast office warned that conditions are expected to worsen on April 14, describing the potential for robust/dangerous fire weather south of Interstate 70.

This increase in risk is attributed to a deepening low-pressure system that is expected to produce 30- to 40-knot southwest flow throughout the mixed layer on April 14.

Regional Forecast Outlook

High temperatures in the upper 70s are expected to persist through April 16 for Cheyenne County. Residents are advised to monitor weather conditions closely and comply with all existing burn bans.

Separate National Weather Service data for Cheyenne County indicates a different localized outlook for the period following April 13, forecasting a shift toward cooler and more unsettled weather.

  • April 14: Partly sunny with a chance of afternoon showers. Highs in the upper 60s and northwest winds 10 to 15 mph, shifting north in the afternoon.
  • April 15: Partly sunny with a chance of morning showers. Highs in the upper 60s and northwest winds 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph.
  • April 16: Mostly sunny with highs in the mid 70s.
  • April 17: Partly sunny with a chance of morning snow and rain showers, followed by likely snow showers in the afternoon. Highs are expected to drop to around 50 degrees.

A Red Flag Warning was also noted as being in effect for certain zones until April 13 at 8:00 PM MDT, reflecting the immediate risks associated with the current wind and humidity levels in the region.
