Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia has compared Christian leaders who claim their faith supports Donald Trump to religious figures who historically used scripture to justify slavery in the United States.

The Democratic senator, who serves as the senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, made these remarks during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper. The discussion focused on how Warnock’s Christian faith informs his political perspectives and his view of the intersection between religion and governance.

The comparison arose after Tapper asked Warnock about pastors who visit the White House to support the former president and suggest that Trump was placed in office for a divine purpose. Warnock stated that such leaders are wrong, arguing that they are following a pattern of skewing religious texts to support oppressive systems.

Warnock noted that there were Christians who previously viewed American chattel slavery as God-like and utilized scriptures to justify that position. He described himself as a product of a countervailing tradition that emerged through the Black Church to fight for freedom and correct the American heresy that attempted to reconcile the faith of Jesus with slavery.

Moral and Spiritual Conflict

In a separate conversation with David Remnick on The New Yorker Radio Hour, Warnock further expanded on this theme, describing the political struggle against Trump as a moral and spiritual battle. During that interview, he compared evangelical Trump supporters to those who had historically supported segregation.

Moral and Spiritual Conflict

Warnock referenced Martin Luther King Jr.’s letter from the Birmingham jail, citing King’s disappointment in the American church and his questioning of who the worshippers in such institutions truly served. Warnock applied this question to the current political moment, specifically questioning the faith of those on the far right who emphasize family values while supporting the former president.

The senator also criticized the positions of some evangelicals regarding private morality, including issues related to gender and sex.

Critique of Administration and Policy

While Warnock stated that he prayed for Trump, he clarified that he did not endorse what he termed an ungodly administration. He argued that the former president required significant prayer and must be held accountable for what he described as unabashed, unvarnished bigotry.

Warnock specifically condemned the cruelty he attributed to Trump’s version of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on American streets. He told Tapper that prayer and prophetic speech—which holds power accountable—must go hand-in-hand, stating that he would not serve as a chaplain to bless that which is ungodly and unjust.

Church Community and Differing Views

During the CNN interview, Tapper asked how Warnock handles conservative parishioners at Ebenezer Baptist Church who disagree with his political stances on abortion and immigration. This included potential concerns from members regarding the murder of Laken Riley by an undocumented immigrant.

Warnock responded by noting that his congregation is Baptist and that he welcomes a variety of viewpoints within the church. He suggested that society needs more grace for those who do not share the same point of view.

In response to these comments, White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers told Fox News Digital that President Trump has made campaign promises to fight for religious freedom. Rogers asserted that the president has secured victories for people of faith, including protecting parents’ rights, restoring biological truth, and keeping men out of women’s sports.
