Komachi’s Washi Performance Art Resonates in London
Updated June 15, 2025
London – Inside Somerset House, artist Midori Komachi, 36, recently presented a unique performance, combining music and the visual appeal of conventional Japanese paper, or washi. Komachi, clad in a dress crafted entirely from washi, stood upon the Nelson Stair, seemingly floating among clouds also constructed from the delicate material.
The performance began with Komachi playing her violin. A recording of cello and shakuhachi flute then joined in, after which Komachi moved, plucking the violin strings with her entire body. The sound of washi against skin became part of the score, creating an experimental soundscape within the rotunda.
Komachi quoted acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota in the exhibition pamphlet, writing, “Sound is lighter then air.” However, her performance carried weight, much like the Sekimori ishi boundary stones anchoring the washi clouds. Toshiki Hirano, Sekisui House Kuma Lab codirector, imported the stones and designed Komachi’s dress.
What’s next
Komachi plans to continue exploring the intersection of sound, space, and traditional materials in future performances, further examining the role of art in cultural expression.
