Washington Spirit chief executive Kim Stone has established a strategic objective to transform the National Women’s Soccer League franchise into a commercial powerhouse and a consistent title winner, with a specific plan to deliver profitability within three years.

Since joining the organization in January 2024 as the first chief executive in the franchise’s history, Stone has overseen a period of significant financial expansion. The club has recorded the highest revenue growth of any team in the NWSL, with an increase of 66 percent to US$19.6 million.

This commercial momentum is reflected in the club’s valuation. According to Sportico estimates for the 14 teams that competed in 2025, the Washington Spirit is valued at US$196 million, placing the franchise among the top five most valuable teams in the league. The overall collective valuation of the NWSL teams is estimated at US$2.6 billion, with Angel City leading the league at a valuation of US$335 million.

Revenue Growth and Market Demand

Stone attributes the rising valuations of NWSL franchises to a combination of limited supply and a strong business case for women’s sports. In an interview with SportsPro, Stone described women’s sports as the growth stock of sports.

The Spirit’s financial trajectory has been supported by a 50 percent growth in sponsorship revenue during Stone’s first two years in the role. The organization has also focused heavily on its season ticket base, which saw 70 percent year-over-year growth in 2025.

Further data from November 2025 indicates a 71 percent year-over-year increase in full season ticket sales, totaling nearly 7,000 tickets. During the 2025 season, the club hosted a record 198,000 fans across 13 home games at Audi Field, resulting in a 9 percent increase in average attendance.

Commercial Strategy and Brand Expansion

The club has integrated creative leadership to drive its commercial appeal, appointing Domo Wells as creative director for apparel collections and other initiatives.

This strategy yielded results in March 2026 with the launch of the Cherry Blossom jersey. According to a letter from Stone dated April 4, 2026, this launch was the most successful in the NWSL in terms of both sales and engagement.

The Spirit’s current growth is part of a broader effort to move toward a revenue-focused mindset. Stone stated that the organization spent two years establishing the necessary infrastructure and organization to support this pivot.

Operational Management and Ownership

The Spirit’s business operations are characterized by rigorous data monitoring. Stone tracks 17 key performance indicators on a monthly basis, which are reviewed alongside owner Michele Kang and the Washington leadership team.

Operational Management and Ownership

Our strategic plan and my monthly business reviews to Michele are of a caliber that I have not seen anywhere I have been in sports. We run this like a company.

This corporate approach to sports management is intended to ensure the club remains responsive to its community while maintaining a trajectory toward sustained financial success.

On-Pitch Performance and Roster Stability

While the business side of the franchise is expanding, the team has faced challenges in championship competition, having lost two consecutive championship games.

To maintain a competitive edge on the pitch, the Spirit recently secured a record-breaking contract extension for star player Trinity Rodman.

The 2026 season began with the club playing in front of a sold-out crowd at Audi Field, signaling that the increased commercial demand is translating into consistent match-day attendance.
