Waterford Airport Funding: Council Response
Waterford Airport Poised for Revitalization with €30 Million Private Investment
Waterford Airport is on the cusp of a important turnaround following the proclamation of a €30 million private investment secured by the Bolster Group. This growth comes after Devin Regional Investments Limited withdrew its previous investment proposal, leaving the future of the airport uncertain.
Waterford City and County Council confirmed today that elected members received a briefing on the proposal and will formally consider it at a special meeting on October 17th. Approval would involve the transfer of the Council’s airport-related assets to the new investor.
Crucially, this investment is designed to fully fund the airport’s development plan as originally submitted to the Irish Goverment in December 2023, eliminating the need for public funding. The plan encompasses a comprehensive upgrade including a runway extension, terminal renovations, and the establishment of facilities necessary to resume commercial passenger services.
Beyond restoring passenger flights, the investment guarantees the retention of existing airport staff and the continuation of the vital Search and Rescue Service (SARS) contract, ensuring continued emergency response capabilities for the region. This commitment to existing personnel provides stability during a period of significant change.
The accomplished securing of this private funding represents a pivotal moment for Waterford Airport and the wider region, offering a pathway to sustainable operation and economic growth. The October 17th council meeting will be a key determinant in realizing this potential.
