Waterford City and county Council has reluctantly approved a €450,000 loan too waterford Airport, a decision that highlights teh ongoing struggle for national funding for regional aviation infrastructure. The move, while necessary to keep the airport operational, has been met with meaningful criticism from councillors who feel the burden is unfairly placed on local ratepayers.

Councillors Express Frustration Over GovernmentS Funding Stance

the council chamber was a scene of palpable tension as councillors debated the financial lifeline for the airport. Many voiced their exasperation with the perceived lack of commitment from the national government to support regional airports.

“This is absolute nonsense,” declared Cllr. John Hearne, articulating a sentiment shared by many. “Ratepayers are being asked to carry the costs that should be carried by government.” His words underscored the core of the debate: the disparity between local responsibility and national policy.

Despite these strong reservations, all councillors ultimately backed the CEO’s recommendation, albeit with considerable reluctance. Cllr. Thomas Phelan described the council as being “in a bit of a pickle,” directly criticising the government’s “lack of interest in funding any more regional airports.” He offered his support, but it was clearly conditional on a broader national strategy.

Echoing these sentiments, Cllr. Catherine Burke called for greater clarity and financial responsibility from the government. “It shouldn’t fall on Waterford Council,” she stated emphatically. “If the government wants this to work, they must provide meaningful investment.”

Balancing the Books and Seeking Greater Influence

The financial realities of the airport’s operations were also a key point of discussion.Cllr. Seanie Power pointed to the ongoing losses, stressing the council’s obligation to “start balancing the books.” This pragmatic approach acknowledged the immediate need for fiscal prudence.

However, the approval of the loan also came with demands for increased ownership and influence. Cllr. Damien Geoghegan argued that the €450,000 should be accompanied by greater council control, noting that current shareholder arrangements were “minuscule” and ineffective. He also stressed the need for renewed input from key figures within the transport and aviation industries to steer the airport’s future.

Adding to the critique of the airport’s current leadership, Cllr.Jason Murphy observed that while the board was competent, it “lacked the specialised skillset needed to lead a turnaround – particularly from an aviation perspective.” This pointed to a potential gap in expertise that needed addressing.

Past Promises and Future Hopes

the current predicament was also linked to unfulfilled government commitments. Cllr. Joanne Bailey agreed with the sentiment that had earlier government promises been honoured, the council would not find itself in this challenging position.

The frustration was palpable, with Cllr. Declan Barry warning that councillors were “at the end of their tether” and that “public patience was wearing thin.” He expressed a common sentiment: “Let’s put in our amount and someone else do the same. This is our only option – but we’ll get there.”

Offering a more optimistic outlook,Cllr. John O’Leary supported the proposal, viewing the airport project as a “real decision for the future of Waterford.” However, he reiterated the critical need for both government support and transparency moving forward.

Awaiting State Funding: Deepening Exposure and New Expectations

The council’s latest loan deepens its financial exposure to Waterford Airport, especially without a firm guarantee of state funding. This move creates new expectations of equity and influence in return for the financial commitment.

As the waiting game for national support continues, councillors are hopeful that this temporary measure will serve as a stepping stone towards securing waterford’s position on the national aviation map. The ultimate goal is for this to be a genuine investment in the future, rather than merely a temporary fix for a widening financial chasm.
