Runway Expansion‌ to Restore Commercial Flights

Waterford Airport is poised to become a⁢ fully operational aviation ‍hub after Waterford Council approved ⁢a landmark private funding agreement on Monday, October 21, ⁢2025. The‌ agreement will fund an extension and widening of the runway to meet international standards, paving the way for the ‌return of commercial flights to Ireland’s South-East region for ‌the first time in nearly two decades.

Bolster Group‍ Secures Funding

The ⁢Bolster group has secured a comprehensive €30‍ million⁣ funding package to ‍deliver the capital project. This private investment eliminates ⁣the airport’s reliance on public sector ⁤funding, a important shift after 17 ‍years of⁤ unsuccessful attempts to secure government support for the runway ⁢extension. Waterford Regional Airport PLC had actively ⁢campaigned for government backing, garnering increasing public and political pressure, as evidenced in local⁤ and national election results across the ‍South-East.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

William Bolster, executive of the Bolster Group, hailed the⁤ council’s vote as “fantastic news”⁣ and emphasized the project’s importance for the ‌region. He stated the project will create upwards of 100 jobs ⁣during construction,⁣ both ⁤on ⁤and off-site, with further employment⁢ opportunities expected to arise as scheduled air‌ traffic increases. Bolster also commended the Councillors for their “brave decision” and trust in the‌ Bolster Group.

This will not only secure existing‌ jobs but will ‌allow employment to expand with upwards of 100 jobs both on and off-site involved during construction. Once complete, further jobs‍ will be added as scheduled air traffic proceeds.

Key Partnerships and Project Timeline

Bolster credited the support of Sean McKeown, chief executive of Waterford⁣ City Council, and Michael Walsh, Chairman of Waterford⁢ Regional Airport, as ⁣crucial to securing the agreement. He stated that construction can commence “imminently” with the‌ Bolster Group fully self-funding the project.

this agreement⁢ would not have been ⁢possible without the support and‍ forward-thinking approach demonstrated by the ‌chief executive of Waterford City Council, ‍Sean McKeown, and the Chairman of ‍Waterford Regional Airport, ‌Michael Walsh.

Enhanced connectivity for the South-East

The runway extension is ⁢expected to significantly ⁣boost ‌international connectivity to Ireland’s South-East, providing ⁣direct access to destinations in Europe and‌ the UK for both business and leisure travelers. ⁢This improved access is‍ anticipated ‍to stimulate economic growth and‌ tourism in the⁤ region.
