Winter Storm Forces School Closures Across Waterford
Waterford, MI – A powerful winter storm sweeping across the region has brought heavy snowfall and icy conditions, forcing numerous school closures in Waterford and leaving parents scrambling for childcare.
As of Sunday evening, all secondary schools in Waterford City will remain closed on Monday, January 6th.While SETU campuses in Waterford, Wexford, and Carlow will remain open, the university is urging staff and students to prioritize safety when deciding whether to travel.
“The safety of our students and staff is our top priority,” said a spokesperson for Waterford City Schools.”We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.”
The closures extend beyond secondary schools, with a growing list of primary and national schools announcing shutdowns. Among those affected are:
CBS Dungarvan
Ardscoil na Deise
St. Declan’s Community College, Kilmacthomas
Abbey Community College, Ferrybank
Portlaw National School
Kill National School
* St. Mary’s Boys NS Ferrybank
A full list of closures can be found on the WLR website.
Local authorities are urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary journeys due to the treacherous travel conditions.
“Its supposedly pretty bad,” said Emma, a Waterford resident. “All the secondary schools in Waterford City are closed tomorrow – that’s Monday, January 6th. And it’s not just the big ones; loads of primary and national schools are shutting down too. my niece goes to St. Declan’s Community College in Kilmacthomas, and they’re closed. Apparently CBS Dungarvan and ardscoil na Deise are closed as well.”
Emma added, “I guess parents are scrambling for childcare. According to the news, they’re saying conditions are too risky for travel.”
While SETU campuses remain open, the university is advising caution for anyone traveling to their locations.
“So the university thinks it’s safe enough to be open, but they advise everyone to be cautious?” said Sarah, another Waterford resident. “That’s a bit confusing.”
The storm is expected to continue throughout the day, with heavy snowfall and icy conditions persisting. Parents are advised to check with their children’s schools directly for the latest updates on closures and potential delays.
