Shooter Jennings unearths Waylon Jennings’ “Songbird” Cover
updated June 16, 2025
Shooter Jennings honored his father, Waylon Jennings, this Father’s Day by sharing a previously unreleased recording: a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Songbird.” The recording, found among Waylon’s old tapes, showcases Jennings and his band “at the peak of their abilities,” according to Shooter.
The “Songbird” cover features added vocals from Ashley Monroe and Elizabeth Cook. It was released with a video containing archival footage from Waylon’s 44th birthday celebration in Nashville.

Shooter Jennings detailed the process of creating the record on social media. He enlisted surviving members of Waylon’s band, the Waylors—Jerry Bridges, Gordon Payne, carter Robertson and Barny Robertson—to add finishing touches to incomplete tracks.
The album, ”Songbird,” is scheduled for release Oct.3. It is a collection of recordings captured between 1973 and 1984 in various studios. Waylon Jennings and Richie Albright produced the album, which features Albright, Ralph Mooney, Tony Joe White, and Jessi Colter.
“Songbird is the beginnings of Waylon’s return to the modern world,” Shooter said. “This is the first of three gifts from me to you: the fans that kept my father’s voice, songs, and legacy alive all these years. The next few years are going to be full of some of the most exciting musical moments that the world never knew they were going to hear. I hope that these records bring the kind of joy to you that they have brought to me.”
What’s next
