Shooter Jennings honored his father, Waylon ​Jennings, this Father’s Day‍ by sharing ⁢a previously unreleased‌ recording:‍ a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Songbird.” The⁢ recording, found⁢ among Waylon’s‍ old tapes, showcases Jennings and⁤ his band “at the peak ‌of their abilities,” according to Shooter.

The “Songbird” cover​ features added vocals from ⁣Ashley Monroe and ⁤Elizabeth Cook. It was released with a ⁢video containing archival footage ⁣from Waylon’s 44th birthday celebration in Nashville.

Shooter Jennings detailed the ⁣process of creating the record ​on‍ social media. ‌He⁤ enlisted surviving‍ members of Waylon’s band,‍ the Waylors—Jerry‌ Bridges, Gordon Payne, carter⁣ Robertson and Barny Robertson—to add finishing touches to incomplete tracks.

The album, ⁢”Songbird,” ‌is scheduled for release ⁢Oct.3. It is a collection ⁢of recordings captured between 1973 and 1984 in various studios. Waylon Jennings⁤ and Richie Albright produced ⁤the album, ​which features Albright, Ralph Mooney, Tony Joe White, and Jessi Colter.

“Songbird is⁢ the beginnings ⁤of Waylon’s‍ return to the modern world,” Shooter said. “This is the first​ of three gifts from me⁤ to you: the fans that⁣ kept my father’s voice, songs, and legacy alive all these years. ⁤The ‌next few years are⁣ going to ‍be⁣ full⁣ of some of the most exciting‍ musical moments that the world never knew they‍ were going to hear. I ⁢hope that these records bring the kind of joy to you that they have brought to ‍me.”
