STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut (UConn) men’s basketball team secured a 79-75 victory over Georgetown University on Saturday night, extending their record to 24-2 for the season and 14-1 within the Big East Conference. The win at Gampel Pavilion was particularly notable as it marked a historic milestone for UConn senior Alex Karaban, who became the program’s all-time winningest player with his 116th career victory.
Karaban’s achievement comes as he also established a new program record for games started, reaching his 136th starting nod. The senior forward contributed 18 points to the win, successfully converting 4 of 6 attempted three-point shots. His clutch performance included a key three-pointer with 2:54 remaining in the game and securing crucial rebounds and free throws in the final moments to seal the outcome.
Solo Ball led the Huskies in scoring with 20 points, marking his second consecutive game achieving at least five three-pointers and surpassing 20 points. Silas Demary Jr. Delivered a strong all-around performance with a double-double, scoring 15 points and recording a game-high 12 rebounds and nine assists, narrowly missing a triple-double. Freshmen Braylon Mullins and Eric Reibe each added 10 points, rounding out a balanced offensive effort with five Huskies scoring in double figures.
UConn established an early lead, building an eight-point advantage by halftime after shooting 56 percent from the field in the first half. They extended this lead to as many as 14 points early in the second half. However, Georgetown mounted a determined comeback, fueled by improved three-point shooting, and narrowed the gap to within a single possession in the closing seconds. UConn ultimately held on, converting their free throws to secure the four-point win.
For Georgetown, KJ Lewis led the scoring with 24 points, accompanied by nine rebounds and five steals. Vincent Iwuchukwu contributed 16 points, while Kayvaun Mulready achieved a career-high 15 points, including four successful three-pointers. Despite their efforts, the Hoyas fell to a 13-12 overall record and 5-9 in Big East play.
The game was a tightly contested affair, with both teams demonstrating resilience. Georgetown’s late surge tested UConn’s composure, but the Huskies were able to withstand the pressure and secure the victory. The win reinforces UConn’s position as a top contender in the Big East Conference and nationally, currently ranked No. 6.
The contest also saw former UConn center Hasheem Thabeet inducted into the Huskies of Honor at halftime, recognizing his significant contributions to the program during his time at the university from 2006-2009.
Karaban, reflecting on his record-breaking achievement, emphasized the importance of his teammates and the rich history of the UConn program. “Everyone knows how historic UConn is, and to have my mark on this program is a blessing,” he said. “All the teammates I’ve had to help me get these wins. it wouldn’t be possible without them. I play for the best coaches and have the best teammates, and when that happens, you’re able to break records.”
The victory over Georgetown marks the second time in four weeks that UConn has overcome a challenging contest against the Hoyas, having previously secured a two-point win in Washington, D.C. On January 17th. The Huskies will next be in action on , facing UConn in a game scheduled for 10:00 AM.
