Bill Gates Praises UAE Collaboration for Global Health and Agriculture
Bill Gates has praised the UAE for its efforts to improve the lives of vulnerable populations worldwide. His comments came during a meeting with Sheikh Theab bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who oversees development affairs in the UAE.
Their discussion focused on enhancing cooperation between the UAE and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. They reviewed their ongoing projects in global health and agriculture, particularly the use of artificial intelligence to tackle challenges in health, education, and food systems.
The meeting also addressed the global fight against preventable diseases, including polio and neglected tropical diseases. Since 2011, UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has supported the global push to eradicate polio, including funding vaccination campaigns in Gaza.
Additionally, they discussed initiatives announced at last year’s COP28. This included the significant expansion of the Last Mile Fund, which aims to eliminate river blindness and lymphatic filariasis in Africa. Initially set at $100 million, the fund’s size has now increased to $500 million, with ambitious goals for eradication.
The “Agriculture Innovation Partnership” was also reviewed. This initiative combines technology and climate efforts to strengthen food systems. It has supported key projects, such as improving weather monitoring systems to help farmers adapt to climate change.
Another highlight was the Red Palm Weevil Consortium, aimed at fostering collaboration to combat threats to palm trees worldwide.
This partnership has made strides in addressing agricultural challenges through innovative solutions.
