Tuscany is facing a critical public safety situation on May 1, 2026, as a combination of strong Grecale winds and a persistent wildfire on Monte Faeta has triggered weather alerts and emergency evacuation orders.

The Regional Civil Protection operational room extended a yellow weather alert for strong winds to May 1, 2026. The alert is specifically in effect from 10:00 to 18:00, as an influx of cold air from the east continues to affect the central and northern areas of the region.

Monte Faeta Wildfire Expansion

The weather conditions have severely complicated the response to a wildfire on Monte Faeta, which first ignited on the afternoon of April 28, 2026. Initially confined to the Lucca side of the mountain, the fire has since expanded to the Pisa side within the municipality of San Giuliano Terme.

The fire reached the Asciano area, prompting authorities to issue an evacuation order for residents living in the northern section of via Trieste in Asciano. Residents affected by the order were advised to find alternative accommodations with relatives or acquaintances or to go to the Pallone di Asciano on via Cavalieri di Vittorio Emanuele.

Firefighting crews and forest fire volunteers have reported a challenging operation, noting that the strong winds have caused the fire to reverse direction and shift its path of progression.

Public Health and Safety Warnings

Due to the movement of smoke from the Monte Faeta blaze, authorities issued a cautionary advisory for the populations of Pisa, Vecchiano and San Giuliano Terme. Residents in these areas were urged to keep windows closed and avoid outdoor activities during the early hours of May 1, 2026, as weather forecasts indicated that smoke could descend into populated areas.

First Alert Weather + | Warm winds increases brush fire risk

The combination of drought and strong Grecale gusts has led to a high risk of further fires across nearly the entire region, with some reports describing the risk level as a bollino rosso or red alert for fires.

Regional firefighting systems remain heavily engaged in the effort to contain the blaze and manage the impact of the wind-driven flames.
