Reviving the Personal Web Pages: A New Era of Digital Expression

The dissatisfaction with expansive platforms and the grand ideologies of Big Tech has led a growing number of internet users to imagine a different kind of web, different from the one we’ve become accustomed to. Platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky, Mattermost and others have witnessed migration in recent years. Still, one of the most exciting shifts has been the renewed interest in personal web pages.

The personal web page is seemingly the digital relic of a recent past, yet it poses a critical and fertile resistance to the for-profit web, prompting a reevaluation of its trajectory.

Empowered by a surge in personal expression on the internet, more people are striving to create and disseminate these “hand-made” sites with more customization than previously possible. Kristoffer Tjalve, the founder of Naive Weekly, sends out a curated list of intricate digital pages every week, including gems like a tribute to a laundry room and a site dedicated to red ballerinas. These handmade sites often present experimental and imperfect, but incredibly unique, digital creations. Communities of makers and artists are cultivating their own plots of digital land, showcasing diverse creations in ways only imaginable years ago.

“Every Sunday since 2018, I sent postcards of links to a peaceful, strange, and poetic web,” Tjalve stated on his site. Various experts have pointed out that these sites have the potential to reshape how we view and utilize the web. Kristoffer says that weekly he sends out quirky and serene web pages to provide a different perspective to the digital world, often minus the daily clutter of ads.

Carl Bessette, a poet and founder of Naive Weekly, is closely tied to personal web pages and is preparing to publish a series of explorations on the history of the internet. In his research, Bessette stresses the unique bond formed when a person creates their own site.

“I made my own gif. It’s long, but after spending three, four hours doing your little gif that will just be used to say ‘welcome to the page,’ the feeling of satisfaction is extraordinary. This is your animation, and you won’t find it anywhere else on the web. Thus, like Little Prince who takes care of his Rose, Carl takes care of his gif; he houses them, sprinkles them, and animates them image by image.”

Blockquote: Bessette attributes part of the rise of megaplateforms to their convenience and ease of use. However, their standardized architecture limits creativity and individuality, leading to conformity. These forums end up “sterilizing” and “homogenizing” digital profiles, stagnating web development.

While the Net Sourcer site frowns on boring “conventionality,” platforms like Wikipedia can take users from an article on the Bolsheviks to celestial mechanics and another landing on Dunbar’s number. “In a digital garden, we can actively choose the path of curiosity,” said Maggie Appleton, a digital design engineer. Befitting the spirit of a garden, these digital landscaping sites continually adapt and flourish, providing users with a unique and engaging navigating experience often lacking in conventional blog styles. Unlike blogs, digital gardens are not necessarily structured into chronological publications; instead, their composition is more like a landscaped garden.

Blackquote: “You just have to think about how Wikipedia takes us from an article on the Bolsheviks to another article on celestial mechanics and then on the number of Dunbar. They entail the click par excellence.” Appleton said, condensing the essence of digital gardens and countering typical practices among platforms.

In taking a look at today’s web—spurred by megaplags like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter—contexts frequently merge, exposing rich information often accidentally targeted at audiences spanning vastly diverse demographics. Carl Bessette emphasizes the importance that ‘what you state is not always meant for everyone,’ suggesting individuality and privacy through platforms like digital gardens.

If you prefer to wade through the clutter and traditional content out there, Carl Bessette offers a piece of sage advice: ‘Never depend on large platforms. The one thing that will always be there is your personal web page. It can become an exit in case of trouble.’

Mastodon, founded in 2016, is an example where decentralized coding supports the microblogging experience originally conceptualized as a Twitter alternative. The decentralization of the project allows for content creators who seek autonomy of control while addressing their individual requirements. Mastodon’s site design encourages users to diversify their online experiences with various moderation and time limit server models.

A Case Study: Mastodon

Imagine a user by the name of Alice, based in Austin, Texas, who wants more control over her online presence. Through Mastodon, Alice finds server options that specialize not only within social forums but also social diversity. For example, if Alice wants to discuss blockchain-based analysis, she can look for frameworks emphasizing this interest. Alice now has an independent news network generated by people interested in blockchain data platforms.

Audience fragmentation is a natural outcome when one decides to harness the personalized features offered by Mastodon. Users join smaller forums geared towards bespoke interests. Often, older, larger forums put online users in silos providing uniform results to diverse groups resulting in what might be called ‘algorithmic dead-ends.’ Instead, Mastodon focuses on active intranet cluster growth leading to more local hosting of data with less dependence on larger servers.

The Future: Alternatives For Large Platforms

Even within Mastodon, the community offers several perspective findings on their platform. For example, Maj-Menz, an artist who handles acrylic designs, started exploring Mastodon sites to find a digital representation platform for her work. Taking cues from Prof. Appleton, Maj dug deeper into specific Mastodon forums such as digital gardens associated with her art.

Simplifying, digital gardens allow flexibility and can accommodate work related to different specialized topics, for example, discussions on data analytics serving as a form-packed garden section for Maj’s art.
