For Roy Murray and Delphine Coudray, celebrating 25 years together wasn’t about tradition – it was about thrills. The couple, from Trim, Co. Meath, recently marked their wedding day with a unique and exhilarating experience: a first-time rollercoaster adventure at Emerald Park in Ratoath, Ireland, alongside their adult children, Zoe and Luka. Their story is a testament to embracing life, love, and a little bit of adrenaline, proving that adventure has no age limit.
A Leap Year Proposal and a Non-Conventional Wedding
Roy and Delphine’s journey to the altar was itself a delightful surprise. It was Delphine who took the leap, proposing to Roy during the leap year of 2024.”I wasn’t expecting it at all, but of course, I said yes!” Roy shared, recounting the unexpected moment. Their wedding, held at the Ardboyne Hotel in Navan on Monday, was an intimate affair with their children as witnesses, followed by a relaxed barbecue at home.
But the couple didn’t want a conventional wedding festivity to end there. They craved an experience that reflected their shared desire for something different, something fun, and something to enjoy with their family.
Emerald Park: A First-Time Thrill for the newlyweds
“We wanted to do something a little different and something with our children,” Roy explained. With the weather not quiet cooperating for a beach trip, Emerald Park presented the perfect option. For both Roy and Delphine, it was their very first time experiencing the rush of a rollercoaster.
They began cautiously, building their courage on the park’s smaller rides before tackling the iconic Cú Chulainn rollercoaster. “We started off on the children’s rollercoasters and worked up the courage,” Roy said, describing the gradual ascent to bigger thrills. Delphine, captivated by the panoramic views from the Cú Chulainn’s peak, wished she could have lingered a little longer. “The views from the top were amazing, I wish we could’ve stayed up there a little bit longer.”
The day wasn’t just special for the newlyweds; it was a nostalgic trip down memory lane for their children. “I’ve always dropped the children, who are in their 20s, at Emerald Park over the years but I’ve never been so it was a fantastic day to spend there with them,” Delphine remarked. “they have always loved Emerald Park and were running around like they were teenagers again.”
Why Now? Cementing a 25-Year Partnership
The decision to marry after 25 years together wasn’t about fulfilling an obligation, but about solidifying a deep and lasting connection. “We just were always so busy and I got to the stage where I thought it would be nice to cement things,” Delphine explained, highlighting the importance of intentionally acknowledging and celebrating their long-term commitment.
The couple capped off their adventurous day with a meal at Bellinter House, with plans for a larger family celebration later in the year.
Emerald Park’s Response and a Standing Invitation
Emerald Park representatives were delighted to hear about the couple’s unique wedding day celebration. A spokesperson extended their congratulations and expressed regret that they weren’t aware of the special occasion at the time. As a gesture of goodwill, the park has offered Roy and Delphine complimentary tickets to return and experience the thrills of Emerald Park’s rollercoasters again.
The Rise of Experiential Weddings and Celebrations
Roy and Delphine’s story reflects a growing trend: couples are increasingly opting for experiential weddings and celebrations that prioritize shared experiences over traditional formalities. This shift is driven by a desire for authenticity, personalization, and creating lasting memories. From hot air balloon rides to adventure sports, couples are seeking unique ways to mark their commitment and reflect their personalities.
This trend is likely to continue, with a greater emphasis on creating immersive and memorable experiences that go beyond the typical wedding reception. As venues and event planners adapt to this demand, we can expect to see even more innovative and adventurous wedding celebrations in the years to come, proving that the most important part of any wedding is the love and joy shared between the couple and their loved ones - and perhaps, a little bit of adrenaline.
