For generations, receiving the key to a city has been a prestigious honour bestowed upon individuals deemed worthy of special recognition. Recently, two prominent Canadians - Abel Tesfaye, known globally as The Weeknd, and NBA star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander – were celebrated in this way, prompting many to wonder: what does it mean to receive the key to a city? And where did this tradition even come from?
From Medieval Gates to Modern Recognition
The tradition of presenting a key to a city isn’t just a ceremonial gesture; its a practice steeped in history. While today’s keys are largely symbolic, their origins lie in a time when city walls and locked gates were essential for defense and security.
The Medieval Origins of the City Key
Imagine a medieval city, encircled by imposing walls. Access was tightly controlled, granted onyl to those deemed trustworthy. The key to the city wasn’t a decorative trinket, but a literal key that unlocked the city gates. To be entrusted with this key signified complete trust and the freedom to enter and leave as one pleased. it was a powerful symbol of acceptance and authority. This wasn’t a common occurrence; it was reserved for visiting royalty, esteemed military leaders, or individuals who had performed exceptional service to the city.
The Evolution of a Tradition
As cities evolved and walls came down, the practical function of the key diminished. However, the symbolic weight remained. The tradition adapted, transforming from a tool for physical access to a gesture of honour and recognition. By the 17th and 18th centuries, the practice of awarding keys to prominent figures became more widespread, particularly in Europe and colonial America.
