Appetite-regulating hormones and the science behind breakthrough weight-loss drugs are leading the discussion for the Nobel Prize in Medicine, set to be announced on Monday when the 2026 Nobel season kicks off, according to AFP. The medicine prize opens a week of announcements running from October 5 to October 12 covering six Nobel categories, drawing intense speculation from researchers and Nobel watchers across global science institutions.

Potential contenders for the opening prize include foundational research into the leptin and ghrelin hormones that govern hunger and satiety, microbiome studies, and investigations into glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), an intestinal hormone that signals fullness and serves as the biological template for treatments like Ozempic and Mounjaro. David Pendlebury, who heads research analysis at data analytics firm Clarivate, noted the immense clinical significance of these discoveries.

While appetite hormones dominate speculation, Nobel watchers emphasize several alternative fields that could also capture the attention of the medicine committee. Annika Ostman, a science reporter at Swedish public broadcaster SR, pointed to stem cell research exploring how skin regenerates and heals wounds, naming American cell biologist Elaine Fuchs and British colleague Fiona Watt as field leaders.

Additional possibilities highlighted across the regional reports include optical coherence tomography, a non-invasive imaging technique that uses reflected light to generate high-resolution cross-sectional views of biological tissues such as the retina and optic nerve.

Following the medicine announcement on October 5, the Nobel committees will award the physics prize on October 6 and the chemistry prize on October 7. The literature laureate will follow on October 8, with literary critic Lina Kalmteg telling AFP that the Swedish Academy might select a woman writer from Latin America, such as 48-year-old Argentine author Samanta Schweblin.

Nobel Committee Addresses Lobbying Pressure Before Peace Prize Announcement

The Nobel Peace Prize, awarded in Oslo, is scheduled for October 9 and remains the most keenly anticipated announcement of the week. Kristian Berg Harpviken, secretary of the Nobel Committee, addressed the intense political environment surrounding the award in an interview with AFP, noting that lobbying efforts and pressure attempts are a persistent feature of the process.

There’s always a lot of lobbying, and ultimately perhaps also attempts to exert pressure on the committee. We’re very used to that.
