London, UK – A recent poll commissioned by the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) reveals a significant surge in demand for weight loss treatments, especially among younger adults. The findings highlight a growing interest in medications like Wegovy and mounjaro, prompting calls from the NPA for stricter regulations too ensure patient safety and appropriate access.
Rising Demand for Weight Loss Solutions
The poll, which surveyed 2,002 individuals, found that 21% had attempted to access weight loss treatments in the past year, either online or in person at a pharmacy. This figure escalates dramatically among younger demographics, with 35% of 16 to 34-year-olds reporting such attempts, a stark contrast to the 7% of those over 55.
Moreover, a considerable 41% of respondents expressed a willingness to opt for weight loss treatments on the NHS if they were made available. This sentiment is even stronger among 25 to 34-year-olds, with 64% indicating they would utilize NHS services, despite many in this age group possibly not meeting the clinical eligibility criteria.
The NPA, representing over 6,000 independent community pharmacies, interprets these figures as a clear indicator of increasing demand for both private and NHS weight loss services.
Weight Loss Jabs: A Medical Innovation and a Growing Concern
Olivier Picard, NPA chairman, described weight loss jabs as “one of the biggest drug innovations this century.” However, he expressed concern that the growing demand highlights the need for careful management to ensure these treatments are appropriate for those seeking them.
“ItS clear from this polling that many more people are interested in getting weight loss jabs than would actually be suitable for treatment,” Picard stated. “We want to make sure supplies are carefully managed so that those in most clinical need can benefit from weight loss medication.”
The NPA fears that spiralling demand, partly fueled by social media, coudl tempt individuals to turn to unregulated online suppliers rather than regulated pharmacies staffed by medical professionals. Online providers may also fail to offer these treatments alongside the structured behavioural change programmes essential for long-term success.
Clinical Eligibility and NHS Provision
Wegovy and Mounjaro are among the medications recommended by the NHS to help combat obesity. These drugs are licensed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 30, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with a weight-related co-morbidity. A co-morbidity occurs when an individual with obesity develops another medical condition due to their weight.currently, the NHS primarily rolls out Mounjaro to patients with a BMI exceeding 40 and at least four co-morbidities, according to NPA estimates.
Pharmacists: Key players in Weight Management
The NPA is advocating for new regulations to safeguard patients purchasing weight loss medication online. They propose that these regulations should mandate a full two-way consultation and the review of all relevant historical medical records before any treatment is prescribed.
The association is awaiting further details on the specific role pharmacies will play in the NHS weight management program. The NPA estimates that pharmacies were responsible for at least 85% of weight loss medication prescriptions in April this year.
“Pharmacists are experts in medication and many have extensive experience delivering weight loss injections as part of a package of care, including lifestyle advice,” Picard emphasized. “Pharmacies are well placed to help roll this treatment out on the NHS, and help people make the best use of these powerful medicines.”
