Nutrition vs.GLP-1s: The Future of sustainable weight ⁢Loss

 Updated June 13, 2025

following Weight Watchers’ bankruptcy filing, the weight loss industry faces ‌scrutiny. Sami inkinen, Virta Health CEO, ‌believes⁣ the ⁢”eat less, exercise more” approach is fundamentally flawed. He argues ⁣that these programs, which rely on calorie counting, fail to address the biological roots of metabolic health,‌ making them unsustainable.

Inkinen contends that ⁣relying on willpower alone is insufficient for long-term weight management. He emphasizes that obesity is a metabolic ⁢disease ‌characterized by persistent hunger and cravings, even with high calorie consumption. Addressing these underlying mechanisms through targeted nutritional interventions ⁣or medication ‌is crucial.

According to Inkinen,⁤ Virta Health, which he co-founded in 2015, focuses ‍on reversing‍ metabolic disease ⁢through nutrition. He says that traditional approaches often miss the mark by not ‍individualizing nutritional recommendations ⁤to minimize “food noise,” needless hunger, and cravings.

Inkinen defines robust metabolic health as a state where the body functions optimally, maintaining normal weight, blood sugar, lipids, blood ⁣pressure, and inflammation levels. He identifies nutrition as the primary driver of metabolic health, with⁤ sleep, exercise, and movement also ⁣playing significant roles.

Ultimately everything is biology, including willpower. If you‍ don’t change the biology, you can’t ⁢solve the problem of over-eating,” Inkinen said.

He also notes the success of GLP-1s ⁢in weight loss,⁢ attributing it to their ability to eliminate hunger, cravings, and “food‌ noise.” inkinen asserts that similar results can be achieved through nutrition, as demonstrated by Virta Health.

What’s next

Inkinen envisions a future ‌where weight management combines nutrition ⁣and pharmaceuticals, with evidence-based lifestyle⁢ treatments and medications ‌like GLP-1s working ⁤in tandem. He believes most people can succeed with nutrition alone, while others may ⁣require medication.
