Welfare Week 2025: Health & Well-being – OPS/WHO
Strengthening Intersectoral Collaboration for Health Equity in the Americas
Table of Contents
Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is actively fostering collaboration across sectors to address health inequities throughout the Americas. This thorough approach recognizes that health is influenced by factors beyond the customary healthcare system, including social determinants like housing, education, and economic opportunity.
Building Networks for Collective Impact
PAHO facilitates this intersectoral work through initiatives like the intersectoral work network and social participation for health equity in the Americas (Red Tipsessa), currently uniting over 50 institutions from more than 13 countries. These networks provide a platform for sharing best practices and coordinating efforts to improve population health.
To bolster local capacity, PAHO offers virtual courses designed for health ministries and local governments, focusing on the implementation of inclusive and participatory public policies. Local governments are central to this movement, especially through participation in the platform of Healthy Municipalities, Cities and Communities (MCCS), a network encompassing more than 3,800 cities across the Americas.
Measuring Progress and Ensuring Sustainability
Recognizing the need for rigorous evaluation, PAHO is developing an analytical framework and associated indicators. This tool will enable countries to effectively monitor and assess the impact of intersectoral initiatives, ensuring they are both effective and enduring in addressing health inequities.
