Welsh Open: Allen’s £150k Bonus Hangs in the Balance After Tuesday Results

Welsh Open: Allen’s £150k Bonus Hangs in the Balance After Tuesday Results

February 25, 2026 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

The race for a substantial £150,000 bonus in the BetVictor Home Nations Series has intensified following a series of results at the BetVictor Welsh Open in Llandudno. While Mark Allen remains in a strong position, his early exit from the tournament has opened the door for several other contenders, setting the stage for a dramatic finish on Sunday.

Allen, who lost his opening-round match to David Grace on Monday evening, currently sits atop the rankings with £145,600 in earnings from the four events comprising the series – the English Open, Northern Ireland Open, Scottish Open and Welsh Open. However, his defeat means that Chang Bingyu, Zhou Yuelong, and Jack Lisowski all have a pathway to surpass him and claim the lucrative bonus.

Both Chang and Zhou delivered impressive performances on Tuesday, winning their opening matches without dropping a single frame. For either to overtake Allen, they must now win the entire Welsh Open. Chang showcased exceptional form, defeating Shaun Murphy with a series of substantial breaks, including scores of 130, 136, 119, and another 130. Murphy, struggling to find any rhythm, managed to pot only one red ball in the third frame.

Zhou Yuelong also enjoyed a comfortable victory, easily overcoming Alexander Ursenbacher to advance to the last 32, where he will face Jackson Page. The Chinese duo’s progress puts significant pressure on Allen, who is now reliant on results elsewhere to maintain his lead.

Jack Lisowski, the winner of the BetVictor Northern Ireland Open, also remains in contention. He defeated Louis Heathcote 4-2 and will next face Xiao Guodong. Lisowski’s path to the bonus is slightly more complex, requiring him to reach the final of the Welsh Open to have a chance of overtaking Allen.

The situation took a turn for Chris Wakelin, the BetVictor Scottish Open winner, who arrived in Llandudno second in the rankings. Wakelin needed to reach the final to claim the £150,000 prize, but suffered a 4-3 defeat to Liam Pullen, effectively ending his hopes. This result further complicates the bonus race and benefits those still in the running.

The BetVictor Home Nations Series bonus has become a significant incentive for players, adding another layer of competition to these already prestigious events. Judd Trump previously secured the bonus in 2020, 2021, and 2022, demonstrating the prestige and financial reward associated with topping the rankings.

Elsewhere at the Welsh Open, Robbie McGuigan of Antrim lost 4-1 to David Gilbert on Tuesday evening. The tournament continues with a series of compelling matches as players battle for both ranking points and the chance to claim the substantial bonus.

The outcome of the Welsh Open will ultimately determine the recipient of the £150,000 bonus. With Allen vulnerable and several players still within striking distance, the final stages of the tournament promise to be filled with tension and excitement. The competition highlights the increasing importance of consistency across the Home Nations Series, where success in all four events is crucial for claiming the top prize.

The focus now shifts to the remaining rounds of the Welsh Open, where Chang Bingyu, Zhou Yuelong, and Jack Lisowski will look to capitalize on Allen’s early exit and secure their place at the top of the BetVictor Home Nations Series rankings. The tournament is set to conclude on Sunday, revealing the winner of the bonus and adding another chapter to the ongoing saga of professional snooker.
