Wendy Williams celebrated her 61st birthday with a powerful declaration of her desire for independence, as her legal team intensifies efforts to end her ongoing guardianship. The former talk show host, who has been under a court-appointed conservatorship since may 2022, marked the occasion with close friends and legal counsel, expressing a fervent wish to regain control of her life.
A Birthday with a Statement
The birthday festivity, held at Fresco by Scotto, was more than just a personal milestone; it was a platform for her legal team to voice their strong opposition to the guardianship.Attorney LaJuan Tacopina, speaking to TMZ reporters, didn’t mince words, describing the process of placing Williams under guardianship as “sickening” and the efforts to end it as “despicably slow.”
Tacopina made a firm commitment: “If the court denies our motion,we’re going to sue the people responsible for this.” He confirmed that a jury trial would be sought if their current motion is unsuccessful, signaling a strategic shift in their approach to challenge the existing guardianship system.
Guardianship Under Fire
Williams’ guardianship was initiated following concerns raised by Wells Fargo regarding her mental competency and alleged financial exploitation. While she was diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia in 2023, Williams has consistently maintained her mental fitness and capacity to manage her own affairs.
In a candid interview earlier this year,Williams directly addressed the guardianship, calling it ”emotional abuse” and likening her situation to imprisonment. Her niece, Alex Finnie, corroborated these sentiments, stating that Williams “sounds great” and does not exhibit the characteristics of an incapacitated individual.
Adding another layer to the legal battle, Williams’ ex-husband, Kevin Hunter, filed a considerable $250 million federal lawsuit in mid-June. Hunter’s suit accuses the current guardian and the presiding judge of abusing their authority, alleging instances of isolation, overmedication, and financial exploitation. He, too, is demanding a jury trial. Williams has since stated she was unaware of Hunter’s legal action.
A Call for Independence
Amidst the legal proceedings, Williams’ birthday celebration was a poignant moment where her desire for freedom was palpable. She confided in close friends, expressing, “I just want to get out of guardianship.” Witnesses described her as being in good spirits, enjoying a lavish meal that included seafood, caviar, Caesar salad, and filet mignon, culminating in a grand baked Alaska birthday cake. Guests remarked that she “looked amazing.”
tacopina emphasized the potential impact of a jury trial, suggesting it could be the key to restoring Williams’ liberty. He expressed confidence that Williams’ “normal self-the same person you watched on TV”-would be more than enough to persuade a jury to terminate the guardianship and allow her to reclaim her independence.
