Governor Moore, the first Black governor in Maryland’s history and the third in U.S. History, is expected to focus on key issues facing Marylanders, including utility costs, public safety, education, and the state budget. This will be his fourth State of the State address as governor.
Coverage of the address will be broadcast live statewide by Maryland Public Television (MPT). MPT’s State Circle team, led by anchor Jeff Salkin, will provide coverage of the event. The broadcast will also include the Republican Party’s perspective, with remarks from Maryland Senate Minority Leader Stephen S. Hershey Jr.
The address comes amid recent political developments, including Governor Moore being uninvited from the National Governors Association (NGA) dinner at the White House. President Donald Trump invited only Republican governors to the event, a departure from tradition. Governor Moore expressed disappointment, stating, “My peers, both Democrats and Republicans, selected me to serve as the vice chair of the NGA, another reason why it’s hard not to see this decision as another example of blatant disrespect and a snub to the spirit of bipartisan federal-state partnership.”
The NGA subsequently announced it would not hold a formal meeting with President Trump when its members gather later this month, reportedly due to the administration’s decision to make the event partisan.
Governor Moore and President Trump have publicly disagreed in recent months, notably over the White House’s consideration of deploying National Guard troops to Democratic-led cities. In August, President Trump criticized Moore’s record on crime in a Truth Social post, offering federal assistance if needed.
Governor Moore announced his intention to run for reelection last September.
