West Bank Violence Escalates Amid settler Attacks and Israeli Raids
Tensions in the occupied West Bank surged as four Palestinians died Wednesday, including a teenager, amid ongoing Israeli military operations and a surge in violence involving Israeli settlers. The role of the international community is being called into question as the West Bank violence continues.
Near Ramallah,in Kafr Malek, three Palestinians were killed and seven others injured during an attack by dozens of Israeli settlers. Local sources reported that settlers torched homes and vehicles, while Israeli troops, acting in a military role, provided protection for the settlers, firing live rounds. The Palestine Red Crescent Society treated at least five Palestinians for gunshot wounds, some critically injured.
Palestinian Vice President hussein al-Sheikh condemned the violence, stating on X that settlers were acting ”under the protection of the israeli army.” He urged the international community to intervene to safeguard Palestinian civilians.
In a separate incident, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that Israeli forces fatally shot a 15-year-old palestinian boy, Rayan Tamer Houshieh, during a raid in al-Yamoun, west of jenin. Houshieh died from a gunshot wound to the neck. The Palestinian Red Crescent confirmed handling a “very critical case” involving a teenager in al-Yamoun before pronouncing him dead.
This marks the second reported death of a teenager in the occupied territory within two days. On Monday, the Health Ministry reported that 13-year-old ammar Hamayel was killed by israeli fire in Kafr Malek.
The West Bank, home to over 3 million Palestinians living under Israeli military rule, has seen increasing settlement activity. More than 100 settlements house approximately 500,000 Israeli settlers on what is considered private Palestinian land.
The United nations high Commissioner for Human Rights,Volker Turk, expressed alarm earlier this year at the escalating violence in the West Bank, urging Israel to cease settlement activities, evacuate settlers, and prevent attacks by security forces and settlers.
Also on Wednesday, a 66-year-old woman, Zahriya Joudeh al-Obaid, was killed by Israeli forces during a raid on the Shu’fat refugee camp, north of occupied East Jerusalem. Her husband, Joudah Al-Obeidi, 67, said his wife was on their roof when police shot her in the head, posing no threat.
Large-scale Israeli military incursions into Jenin, Tulkarem, and their refugee camps have resulted in widespread destruction and displacement, affecting at least 40,000 people, according to UN figures. Wafa news agency reports that at least 40 palestinians have been killed since the latest operation in Jenin began 156 days ago.
What’s next
The international community is expected to increase pressure on all parties to de-escalate the situation and protect civilian lives.Further reports from human rights organizations are anticipated, detailing the extent of the violence and calling for accountability.
