Cricket West Indies has announced that the second match between the Leeward Islands Hurricanes and the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in the 2026 West Indies Championship has been abandoned as a draw due to dangerous pitch conditions at the Sir Viv Richards Stadium in Antigua and Barbuda.
The decision was made on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, during the first session of the third day of play after the pitch began to exhibit unpredictable and uneven behaviour, raising serious concerns for player safety.
During this period, Leeward Islands batsman Jeremiah Louis was struck on the helmet while facing the pace of Jayden Seales. He was immediately attended to by medical personnel and subsequently transported to hospital for evaluation of a possible concussion. Louis is reported to be in stable condition.
Following discussions with the pitch curator, it was determined that the surface could not be safely repaired without creating an unfair advantage, leading officials to deem the pitch unfit for play to resume.
Under the playing conditions governing the West Indies Championship, when on-field umpires determine that it is dangerous or unreasonable for play to continue, play must be stopped and the Cricket West Indies Match Referee consulted. The match was consequently abandoned as a draw.
Both teams will be awarded the points they had accumulated up to the point of abandonment, in accordance with the championship’s playing conditions.
No further matches are scheduled at the Sir Viv Richards Stadium until the West Indies Championship Final, which is set to take place from May 17 to May 20, 2026. Cricket West Indies confirmed that all necessary resources and expertise will be deployed to ensure the preparation of a safe and competitive playing surface for the final.
The West Indies Championship, formerly known as the Regional Four Day Competition, is a first-class cricket tournament administered by Cricket West Indies. It features eight teams, including six franchise-based sides representing Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago, as well as the Leeward Islands, Windward Islands, and Combined Campuses and Colleges.
