West Indies cricket officials state that England financial backing could make a women’s Test match a certainty next year, according to BBC Sport. Cricket West Indies chief executive Chris Dehring confirmed that while talks continue for the April and May 2027 tour, logistical expenses and inter-island travel costs create severe financial hurdles.
England and Wales Cricket Board chair Richard Thompson indicated the governing board would consider funding the red-ball fixture if required. England wants the Test played to aid preparations for an Ashes campaign that begins in June with a match at Headingley.
Logistical Burdens and Inter-Island Travel Costs
Hosting cricket in the Caribbean involves unique financial pressures due to the geography of the region. Cricket tours typically rely on reciprocal arrangements where the home board covers visiting logistical expenses like accommodation and travel. In the West Indies, those expenses multiply because teams, officials, and broadcast equipment must fly between islands.
Dehring explained the broadcasting burden by highlighting equipment transport.
We have to fly all of the equipment and crew into any venue to be able to broadcast a match. That is a significant figure. Sky doesn’t have to fly from London to Manchester for one match.

Financial Restructuring at Cricket West Indies
Cricket West Indies announced a wide range of money-saving measures last week, including a 25% reduction in retainer fees for internationally contracted men’s players. Those international agreements run from October 2026 through September 2027, while domestic retainers are shortened from 12 months to seven months.

Islands Bid to Host 2027 Multi-Format Tour
The multi-format tour is scheduled for April and May 2027 and includes three T20 internationals and three one-day internationals alongside the Test. The West Indies cancelled a women’s Test against Australia earlier this year.
Island bidding to host the fixtures began recently and concludes in December. Dehring noted that there has been interest shown in hosting the women’s matches, though hosting everything in one location remains cheaper than traveling across islands.
Dehring stated that while they hope to cover costs from their own resources, the Test would be a certainty if the ECB were to assist them.
