West Nile Virus: Control Measures Activated in Medicine
West Nile Virus detected in Mosquitoes in Bolognese Territory, Prompting Public Health Measures
Bologna, Italy – Following recent outbreaks of Dengue and Chikungunya in the region, the West Nile Virus (WNV) has now been detected in mosquito populations within the Bolognese area, specifically in Medicine. while no human or equine cases have been reported yet, the emilia-Romagna region has confirmed the presence of the virus in mosquito samples collected in Medicine, an area bordering Bassa Romagna. this revelation has triggered enhanced mosquito control and prevention strategies across the province of Ravenna and surrounding municipalities.
Increased Vigilance and Control Interventions
The Emilia-Romagna region’s veterinary surveillance programme identified the positive mosquito samples, leading to the activation of carrier control interventions. Municipalities within Bassa Romagna, in coordination with the province of Ravenna, are implementing thorough measures to mitigate the risk of transmission to humans and horses.
“this means that further mosquito control and prevention of infection control interventions in humans and horses will be put in place in all the provinces concerned,” stated the municipalities of Bassa Romagna. They emphasized that the West Nile virus is already “present in a stable way in the regions of the Padano basin,” with wild birds and mosquitoes serving as the primary reservoirs and vectors for the virus.
Public Health Ordinances and disinfestation Measures
On the recommendation of the Ausl public health department, the municipalities forming the union of Lower Romagna have issued special ordinances and are adhering to operational guidelines applicable throughout the province of Ravenna.
Key measures include:
Mandatory Disinfestation for Outdoor Events: Organizers of outdoor events with 200 or more participants in the evening are now obligated to conduct remarkable preventive disinfestation using adulticides.
Evaluation of Urbanized Areas: Events held in already periodically treated urbanized areas will undergo an ecological assessment by public health officials, possibly leading to additional disinfestation efforts.
Specialized Treatment Companies: All disinfestation treatments must be carried out by specialized companies. These interventions require advance notification of at least 48 hours and must also be communicated to beekeepers to ensure the protection of nearby hives.
Citizen Recommendations and Public Administration Efforts
The union of municipalities in Lower Romagna is also urging citizens to take proactive steps to protect themselves from mosquito bites. residents are advised to:
protect Against Mosquito Stings: Employ personal protective measures such as using insect repellent and wearing long, light-colored clothing, especially during dawn and dusk.
* Conduct Larvicide Treatments: Carry out larvicide treatments in private properties, diligently removing any standing water that can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
the public administration is committed to its role in mosquito control by ensuring periodic larvicide treatments in all public spaces. This includes gardens, squares, parks, municipal buildings, road verges, ditches, and rural drainage channels, thereby reducing mosquito populations across the community.
The detection of West Nile Virus in local mosquito populations underscores the importance of ongoing surveillance and coordinated public health responses to protect community well-being.
