West Nile Virus Detected in New Orleans: Mosquito Abatement Scheduled
Mosquitoes with West Nile virus have been found in Orleans Parish, according to the New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board (NOMTRCB). Recent tests from surveillance traps on the East Bank showed positive results, leading to planned mosquito control measures.
NOMTRCB will conduct truck-based treatments on Tuesday night from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., weather permitting. The treatments will focus on Culex quinquefasciatus, the main carrier of the virus in the area. The targeted neighborhoods include:
- Black Pearl and Audubon: St. Charles Avenue, Nashville Avenue, and the Mississippi River.
- Lakeview: Allen Toussaint Boulevard, I-610, West End Boulevard, and Orleans Avenue.
- Plum Orchard and Read Boulevard West: Dwyer Road, Chef Menteur Road, I-10, and Read Boulevard.
Officials recommend that residents take steps to protect themselves. Suggestions include removing standing water from around homes, using insect repellent, and checking that window screens are in good condition.
