The Netherlands has recorded its first death linked to the West Nile virus this year. It marks a severe escalation as the virus returns to Dutch territory after a multi-year absence.
The First Dutch Fatality After Years of Absence
The total number of individuals believed to have contracted the virus via transmission within the Netherlands has reached three cases. Public health officials announced the country’s first local case of the season just days prior. It represents the first domestically acquired infection since 2020.
Authorities have not clarified whether the patient who died was among the cases previously announced. Out of respect for privacy regulations, the RIVM withheld further details regarding the fatality, including the age or prior health status of the deceased individual.
Neurological Risks and Hospital Care
Infected mosquitoes serve as the primary source of the West Nile virus, transmitting the pathogen to humans through bites. While many infections produce mild or no symptoms, the virus can trigger severe, life-threatening neurological disease in a small fraction of those exposed.

Data from the World Health Organization indicates that severe forms of the illness develop in approximately one out of every 150 infected people.
Climate Pressures and European Spread
Public health agencies point to rising environmental temperatures as a key driver behind the expanding geographic reach of the mosquito-borne illness. Elevated warmth creates more hospitable breeding grounds for mosquitoes, enabling them to survive longer and extend their range into new regions across Europe.
This seasonal expansion has coincided with a surge of West Nile virus cases in several other European nations during the summer months, including Italy and Greece. Despite the local transmission and the recorded fatality in the Netherlands, the RIVM maintains that the overall risk of contracting the virus within Dutch borders remains very low.
