The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) reached a tentative agreement on April 4, 2026, securing a new contract nearly a month before the previous agreement was set to expire on May 30, 2026.

The deal is notable for its duration and the speed with which it was reached. Unlike the typical three-year term, this new contract will run for four years, providing the studios and streamers with an additional year of labor stability and avoiding the possibility of a strike during that period.

Key Terms and Financial Protections

A central component of the negotiations was the stability of the WGA health plan. The guild’s health fund had suffered significant losses in recent years, totaling $122 million in 2023 and 2024 alone due to rising costs and a reduction in work following the 2023 writers’ strike. Variety reports that the fund has bled $200 million over the last four years.

To address this, the tentative agreement includes a multimillion-dollar contribution from the studios to bolster the strained health plan. In addition to health funding, the deal includes the following provisions:

  • Protections against AI training and AI-related threats.
  • An increase in fees and residuals specifically for streaming.
  • Higher compensation for productions that are streaming-only.
  • Increases in pension contributions.

A Shift in Negotiating Tone

Industry insiders describe the atmosphere of these talks as collaborative and congenial, marking a departure from the contentious environment of previous contract cycles. Negotiations began in mid-March and were led by WGA Executive Director and chief negotiator Ellen Stutzman.

A Shift in Negotiating Tone

The AMPTP is now led by Greg Hessinger, who made securing longer-term contracts a core objective in dealings with the WGA, the Directors Guild of America (DGA), and SAG-AFTRA.

The efficiency of the process stands in stark contrast to the 2023 labor dispute, which resulted in a 148-day strike. That conflict was driven by demands for better streaming residuals and TV staffing minimums, and it significantly disrupted the industry. Reports indicate there was little appetite for a repeat of such a prolonged fight, especially given the global contraction currently affecting the industry.

Ratification Process and Internal Challenges

The agreement is currently provisional and must undergo a formal approval process before it becomes official. The tentative bargaining agreement will first be sent to the WGA’s national board for an approval vote.

Following board approval, the contract will be released to the general WGA membership for a ratification vote. While the WGA and AMPTP remained silent immediately following the deal, a formal announcement is expected shortly.

However, the ratification process may face unique hurdles for WGA West. Staffers responsible for overseeing communications between leadership and members, as well as those who organize town hall meetings for contract inquiries, have been on strike since mid-February 2026.
