As TikTok Faces U.S. Ban, Users Flock to Chinese-Owned RedNote

As the U.S. Supreme Court weighs a potential ban on TikTok, American users are already migrating to another Chinese-owned platform: RedNote. Known in China as Xiaohongshu, or “little red book,” the app has surged in popularity, becoming the most downloaded free app on the U.S. App Store this week.

With over 300 million users in China, RedNote combines short-form video content, lifestyle tips, and e-commerce, offering a familiar yet distinct alternative to TikTok. From beauty tutorials to restaurant reviews, the platform has become a hub for younger audiences seeking both entertainment and shopping opportunities.

Unlike TikTok, where influencers dominate, RedNote prioritizes user interests over follower counts. Designed primarily for Mandarin speakers, the app also displays the location of Chinese users, fostering a sense of community and authenticity.

How RedNote Works
Launched in 2013 as a shopping platform for women, RedNote has evolved into a multifaceted social media app valued at an estimated $17 billion. Users can share short videos, post text-based content, engage in lengthy comment threads, and shop directly within the app. Its focus on lifestyle content has made it a go-to resource for emerging businesses and individuals seeking advice on everything from fashion to home decor.

Americans Embrace RedNote
American users have quickly adapted to the platform, with many embracing the hashtag “TikTokrefugee,” which has garnered over 100 million views and 2.5 million discussion threads. Heather Roberts, a RedNote user, captured the sentiment in a video message: “Our government is out of their minds if they think we’re going to stand for this TikTok ban … We’re just going to a new Chinese app, and here we are.”

To bridge the language gap, some Americans are using tools like ChatGPT to translate posts and engage with Chinese users. “We want to be good guests,” one user commented, highlighting efforts to integrate respectfully into the existing community.

Chinese users have also welcomed the newcomers, offering advice on navigating the app’s censorship rules and even seeking help with English homework. One such post received over 2,000 likes, showcasing the cross-cultural connections forming on the platform.

Censorship and Government Ties
RedNote is owned by Xingin Information Technology, a private company, but it operates under strict Chinese censorship laws. A leaked database revealed that banned terms include 546 nicknames for President Xi Jinping, reflecting the app’s compliance with government regulations.

Chinese state media has acknowledged the challenges posed by the influx of American users, noting that their diverse content could complicate censorship efforts. “The content posted by American users is more diversified, which to some extent increases the difficulty of content review and management,” China News Service reported.

The app’s name, “little red book,” echoes the title of a collection of Mao Zedong’s sayings, though the company has never confirmed any connection to the former leader.

As the debate over TikTok’s future continues, RedNote’s rise underscores the global nature of social media and the resilience of digital communities in the face of political uncertainty.
