What is the ‘Ministry of Government Efficiency’ led by Kasturi? An advisory body instead of a government agency?
Elon Musk to Lead New Efficiency Advisory Group
US President-elect Donald Trump appointed Tesla CEO Elon Musk to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) on November 12. This group is not a formal federal department but an advisory body.
Trump described DOGE as a modern version of the Manhattan Project, aiming to streamline government operations. He stated the group’s goals include reducing bureaucracy, limiting overregulation, cutting wasteful spending, and restructuring federal agencies. The work is expected to finish by July 4, 2026, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Musk previously endorsed Trump during the presidential campaign. He actively supported Trump’s initiatives and formed a super PAC to raise funds for the campaign. By late October, Trump had spent $132 million on his campaign, and Musk’s appointment reflects this investment.
Trump praised Musk as a “new star” and a “super genius,” expecting him to contribute significantly to the new administration. Musk responded to the announcement, questioning if it posed a threat to democracy, stating instead that it targeted bureaucracy.
While DOGE is not an official government body, Trump indicated it would provide advice to the White House. The group may serve as a committee to guide major reforms, but it would need Congressional approval to become an official department.
The Hill reported uncertainty about DOGE’s official status and the extent of Musk’s authority. Nonetheless, Musk is likely to have considerable influence as a close ally of Trump.
Concerns about conflicts of interest arise since Musk owns several businesses. However, being part of an advisory body avoids government ethics rules regarding asset disclosures.
Vivek Ramaswamy will work alongside Musk. Ramaswamy is a former biotech entrepreneur and endorsed Trump after exiting the Republican nomination race. He noted they would pursue bold actions in their roles.
International reports highlight the name DOGE, noting its resemblance to Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency popularized by Musk. The Associated Press suggested that the name might be linked to this virtual currency.
