Meta’s plan to introduce in-app advertising to WhatsApp users globally has hit a snag in Europe.The rollout of WhatsApp ads, initially slated to begin, will be delayed in the European Union until at least 2026 due to privacy concerns.
The delay follows Meta’s announcement earlier this week that ads would start appearing in the “Updates” tab, specifically within Status posts and the Channels list. The new advertising system relies on personal data such as city, language, and interactions with Channels and ads. Concerns arose when it was revealed that users who linked WhatsApp with their Meta Accounts Center would have their ad preferences from Instagram and Facebook used for further targeting.
Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) is taking the lead in addressing these concerns. Des Hogan,Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner,saeid WhatsApp informed them of the delay. “That new product won’t be launching in the EU market until 2026,” Hogan said.”We have been informed by WhatsApp and we will be meeting with them to discuss any issues further.”

Dale Sunderland, another commissioner at the DPC, acknowledged the early stage of the process. “We’ll engage as we do with every other new feature,new issue that they bring to us… and at this stage,it’s too early to say what,if any,will be any red line issues,” Sunderland said.
