WhatsApp has introduced a new feature called Message Summaries that leverages Meta AI to condense unread messages within chats. The tool is designed to provide users with a general overview of conversation activity before they read the specific details of individual unread messages.
The feature began rolling out in the English language to users in the United States on June 26, 2025. WhatsApp has stated that it plans to bring the functionality to additional regions and languages later in 2025.
Privacy and Technical Implementation
The Message Summaries feature is powered by Private Processing, a system WhatsApp launched in April 2025 to enable AI capabilities while preserving user privacy. This system processes AI requests within a secure cloud environment known as a confidential virtual machine (CVM).
To maintain security, the system establishes a secure application session between the user’s device and a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). This connection is facilitated through Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP), a protocol designed to hide the user’s identity from the server.
No one else in the chat can see that you summarized unread messages either

WhatsApp stated that this technical architecture prevents third parties, including Meta and WhatsApp itself, from seeing the actual contents of messages during the summary generation process.
User Controls and Opt-In Settings
Message Summaries is an optional feature and remains disabled by default. Users who wish to use the tool must manually enable it.
the platform has introduced Advanced Chat Privacy
settings. This allows users to choose specifically which chats can be shared for the purpose of providing AI-related features, giving users granular control over their data.
Regulatory and Security Context
The introduction of these AI-driven privacy measures comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny. The U.S. House of Representatives recently added WhatsApp to a list of applications banned from government-issued devices, citing concerns regarding security.
