WhatsApp is developing a redesign that integrates Status updates directly into the main Chats tab, moving the feature closer to the app’s primary messaging activity. According to reports from April 9, 2026 and April 10, 2026, references to this change have been discovered in beta versions of the application for both iOS and Android.

The upcoming interface is designed to mirror the Stories format used by Instagram. Users will see a carousel of profile circles at the top of the chat list, allowing them to view status updates from their contacts without leaving the main conversation screen. The first entry in this carousel will serve as a shortcut, enabling users to publish their own status updates quickly.

Interface and User Interaction

To maintain a clean and less intrusive user interface, the Status tray will not be visible by default in the Chats tab. Instead, the feature will be hidden until a user performs a specific gesture. As reported by 9to5Mac on April 9, 2026, users will need to pull down from the top of the chat list to reveal it, a mechanism similar to the way Stories are accessed in the Telegram messaging app.

Once revealed, the tray will operate similarly to the existing Updates tab. The system will organize content based on contact relevance, prioritizing updates from the individuals with whom the user interacts most frequently.

Further details reported by Tech Times on April 10, 2026, suggest that the redesign may include a dedicated section for updates that have been muted or are considered less important, further refining how content is organized within the carousel.

Technical Implementation and Beta Testing

The evidence for this redesign comes from recent beta builds. WABetaInfo first noted hints of the feature in the WhatsApp beta for Android. Subsequent findings confirmed that the latest build available on TestFlight for iOS also contains references to the integration of Status updates into the chat list view.

Technical Implementation and Beta Testing

While the references are present in the code, the feature is not yet accessible to general users. The presence of these references on both major mobile platforms indicates that Meta is laying the groundwork for a synchronized rollout across its messaging ecosystem.

Alignment with Meta’s Content Strategy

Status updates on WhatsApp continue to utilize the 24-hour disappearing content format. By bringing this format to the top of the Chats tab, Meta is attempting to give the feature a more central role within the app, aligning it more closely with the experience of other Meta products like Instagram.

This shift suggests a strategic move to merge ephemeral social sharing more deeply with direct messaging. Tech Times noted that this update is expected to bring a lot of creative tools and a 24-hour content format to the redesigned experience, though specific details on new creative tools have not been fully disclosed.

Currently, Status content exists in a separate section of the app. Moving these updates into the main chat flow represents a significant change in how users navigate the application and consume short-term updates from their contacts.
