WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature called Group Message History, designed to ease the onboarding process for new members joining group chats. The functionality allows group administrators and existing members to share a recent history of messages with newcomers, providing context without requiring repeated explanations or the sending of screenshots.
The feature addresses a common pain point for WhatsApp users: the difficulty new members face understanding ongoing conversations and referencing previous discussions. Previously, new additions to a group would often request summaries or specific information already shared, leading to repetitive questions and potential disruption. Group Message History aims to mitigate this by offering a readily available snapshot of recent activity.
When adding a new member to a group, administrators and members will now be presented with an option to “Send messages.” This triggers a selection menu allowing them to share between 25 and 100 of the most recent messages. The choice of how much history to share rests with the sender, offering a degree of control over the information provided. WhatsApp has stated that the 100-message limit was chosen because “new members only need to read the most relevant, recent context, and the whole group can easily see the messages that have been shared.”
Importantly, sharing message history is not automatic. It requires a deliberate action by a group member or administrator. Administrators retain the ability to disable the feature entirely for their groups, preserving privacy and control. To ensure transparency, WhatsApp will notify all group members when message history is shared, displaying details about the sender and timestamps of the messages. The shared messages will also be visually distinguished from the ongoing conversation.
The rollout of Group Message History is currently happening in stages, meaning not all users will have access to the feature immediately. Keeping the WhatsApp application updated is likely to expedite access once the update reaches a user’s region.
This update arrives alongside other recent improvements to WhatsApp’s group chat functionality. A previous update introduced the ability to add member tags – short descriptions displayed below a user’s name within the group – helping to clarify roles and relationships within larger groups. These additions demonstrate WhatsApp’s ongoing effort to improve the usability and organization of its group chat feature, which remains a central component of the platform’s appeal.
