WhatsApp Launches AI Summaries for Unread Messages
Updated June 26, 2025
Meta is releasing a new feature for WhatsApp that uses AI to summarize unread messages. The “Private Message Summaries” tool aims to help users quickly catch up on conversations, especially in group chats with numerous unread messages.
The AI-powered feature provides users with a bulleted summary of unread conversations. Users can access the summary by tapping on the unread messages count within a chat, which will display a “Summarize privately” option. The summarized messages appear in a few lines and can be dismissed easily.

The message summaries are generated without notifying other participants in the chat. Read receipts are only sent once a user begins scrolling thru the unread messages.
The AI summaries are disabled by default. Users who want to use the feature must enable it in the app’s settings under Chats > private Processing. Users can also customize the feature to exclude specific chats.
Meta says the new tool uses a unique “Private Processing” capability. This allows the AI to access and summarize messages without Meta or WhatsApp actually reading the content. The company says this ensures user privacy and prevents messages from being used for AI training purposes.
The Private Message Summaries feature is initially rolling out to iPhone and Android users in the United States and supports English. Meta plans to expand the feature to more countries and languages in the future.
What’s next
WhatsApp users can expect wider availability of the AI-powered message summaries in more regions and languages soon, as Meta continues to develop and refine the feature.
