Archaeological discoveries support this idea. More than 150 miniature wagons, crafted ⁣from clay ⁤and engraved wiht wickerwork patterns, ⁤were found in the region. Carbon dating indicates these⁤ models are the oldest known depictions of wheeled transport.

The traditional explanation posits that ​wheels evolved from ⁤simple wooden rollers. However, James and his team revisited this hypothesis, considering ‍the ​favorable​ conditions mines would ⁢have provided for ⁤rollers. the‍ confined spaces ⁣would⁤ have made moving​ rollers around⁤ carts ⁣particularly difficult.

The transition ‌from rollers to wheels ​required⁢ two​ key ‌innovations: modifying the cart’s base with semicircular sockets to hold the rollers ⁢and altering the rollers themselves. To‍ understand this change, researchers used physics and computer-aided‍ engineering.
