A theory suggests that the wheel, a pivotal invention, may have originated in an ancient mining community in the Carpathian Mountains, now part of Hungary. Around 3900 BCE, copper miners may have devised the wheel to ease the transportation of heavy ore, according to Kai James, a professor of aerospace engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Archaeological discoveries support this idea. More than 150 miniature wagons, crafted from clay and engraved wiht wickerwork patterns, were found in the region. Carbon dating indicates these models are the oldest known depictions of wheeled transport.
The traditional explanation posits that wheels evolved from simple wooden rollers. However, James and his team revisited this hypothesis, considering the favorable conditions mines would have provided for rollers. the confined spaces would have made moving rollers around carts particularly difficult.
The transition from rollers to wheels required two key innovations: modifying the cart’s base with semicircular sockets to hold the rollers and altering the rollers themselves. To understand this change, researchers used physics and computer-aided engineering.
They created a computer program to simulate the evolution from roller to wheel, based on the principle of mechanical advantage. The algorithm modeled hundreds of potential roller shapes, evaluating their mechanical advantage and structural strength. The simulation converged on the wheel-and-axle shape.

The miners may have inadvertently initiated this process.Friction at the roller-socket interface could have worn away the wood, narrowing the roller at the contact point. Alternatively, miners may have thinned the rollers to allow carts to pass over obstructions.
As time passed, better-performing designs were favored, leading to rollers with a slender bar capped by large discs—the rudimentary wheel.
