International Men’s Day: An Overview

International Men’s Day is celebrated on November 19 each year. This day highlights the important role men play in society and the challenges they face. It is a time to show gratitude and discuss topics like health, equality, and gender relations.

Origin of International Men’s Day

International Men’s Day began in Trinidad and Tobago in 1999. Dr. Jerome Thiloksingh, an academic and historian, started this initiative. He aimed to honor men who positively contribute to society. The day also raises awareness of the challenges men face in mental and physical health, along with the significance of their roles in families and workplaces. Dr. Thiloksingh chose November 19 because it is his father’s birthday, who was a positive role model for him.

Purpose of International Men’s Day

The day aims to achieve several goals:

  1. Promote Men’s Health: Focus on common diseases like cancer and heart disease, along with mental health awareness.

  2. Provide Role Models: Celebrate men who serve as good role models in families and society.

  3. Improve Gender Relations: Foster understanding and challenge stereotypes between genders.

  4. Discuss Traditional Masculinity: Address the stigma around seeking psychological help.

Celebrations Around the World

More than 80 countries celebrate International Men’s Day. Events include health awareness campaigns and seminars on work-life balance and fatherhood. This day sheds light on the high suicide rates among men, which reflect a need for better mental health support and breaking social barriers that hinder men from seeking help. It also addresses the pressures of traditional masculinity that can harm men’s well-being.

Connection to International Women’s Day

International Men’s Day is not a competitor to International Women’s Day but a complement. Both days aim for gender balance by addressing the concerns of each gender. International Men’s Day promotes men’s health, highlights positive male roles, and addresses psychological and social challenges. It contributes to building a balanced and just society.
