[사진=호주뉴스닷컴 보도 갈무리]” />A man who weighed 270kg and was on the verge of giving up on life after experiencing cardiac arrest two or three times a day has shared his story of how he dramatically lost weight and ‘transformed’ his body to 106kg. Australian News.com introduced the story of Australian Dane Lyons, who successfully lost weight and is now preparing to compete in a bodybuilding competition.

Dane, now 27, had an active childhood but started gaining weight at age 16. When he started drinking, his weight increased and he continued to gain weight for 8 years. By the age of 24, he was living a life of despair, weighing between 260 and 270 kg.

“At one point I was drinking a bottle of Jack Daniel’s every night,” Dane recalled. “I just thought I was going to drink until I died. I thought about suicide. My heart would stop beating at least two or three times a day.”

His family constantly urged Dane, who was large in stature, to lose weight because they were concerned about his health. But it didn’t go into his ears. “You can have 100 people around you telling you to lose weight, but if you don’t make the decision to change yourself, you’ll never get started,” Dane said.

What changed his mind was what his current mother-in-law said when he was dating his current wife, only a year into their relationship. When his mother-in-law asked him about his future with his daughter and his plans for children, she said that she was worried that he would die quickly because of his weight at the time and would not be able to spend time with his children. At that time, he felt like he had been hit and realized that he had to do something. The conversation with his mother-in-law became a ‘turning point’ in his life.

He started a fierce battle with himself. First, he stopped drinking alcohol, which he used to drink every day. He didn’t even touch fast food. He drank only diet drinks that were mostly made up of protein. As a result, he lost 80 kg naturally at first. He maintained his weight at around 180-190 kg for a while, but then gained about 40 kg again. He realized that it was difficult to lose weight on his own when his body was over 200 kg again. He thought that he needed help to make a real change.

Dane decided to undergo a gastrectomy in March 2023 to achieve his weight goal. After consistent efforts such as diet control and exercise, he currently weighs 106 kg. As per his goal, he is scheduled to participate in the US Bodybuilding Competition for the first time in October. [사진=호주뉴스닷컴 보도 갈무리]Dane decided to have a gastrectomy in March 2023 to achieve his weight goal. However, the surgery was much harder for Dane than losing weight naturally. He was more stressed than he thought because he had to accurately record and manage his major nutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Nevertheless, Dane maintained his diet well after the surgery and finally reached 160 kg.

At this time, he focused more on protein intake and exercise. As a result, his physique began to improve. Dane, who became greedy, decided to challenge himself in the Transformer bodybuilding category held in the United States. He focused on training one muscle group every day through a training called ‘Bro Split’. He trains for two to three hours a day and aims to burn 150 calories by doing aerobic exercise. He walks 12,000 steps every day and swims two days a week.

After all this effort, Dane now weighs 106kg. Since he lost more than half of his body weight, his skin is loose. He knows that he can get an incision surgery because the skin on his legs, stomach, and chest is so sagging, but it is a big surgery for Dane and the price is not cheap. Dane said, “To be honest, I’d rather have loose skin than get fat again, as much as I’ve changed,” and revealed that he has no intention of getting a skin excision surgery.

Dane, who says he wants to share his transformation journey to help others like him, is set to compete in his first US bodybuilding competition in October, as planned.
