A Post-Divorce Journey
The film centers on Albert, portrayed by Ivan Franek, a divorced man searching for renewed purpose. He finds himself drawn into a relationship with Catherine,a substantially younger woman played by Croatian actress Ivona Bakovic. Their initial connection is marked by love, understanding, and a deep intimate harmony.
Hidden Desires and Unexpected Turns
However, the seemingly idyllic relationship soon faces challenges. Hidden desires and unforeseen circumstances emerge, radically altering the dynamic and testing the very foundation of their bond.
Director’s Inspiration
director Milan Cieslar said the genesis of the film came during the COVID-19 pandemic. “at the time of COVID, in some isolation, I was thinking about a more personal project that would reflect the concern of the stolen world around us and was also a strong love story,” Cieslar said.”Initiating the true story of a substitute motherhood that inspired me to write a screenplay and which I enriched with characters that are intimately close to me.”
Casting Choices
Cieslar said that Ivan Franek was his immediate choice for the role of Albert. “He was my first choice and I am glad he accepted the role promptly. Although it complicated the time program with the filming of the previous film Luc Besson, yes,” cieslar said.
The casting of Ivona Bakovic as Catherine came about through a European casting search. “We were looking for a Czech actress, but all the types corresponded to the long -term have long been contractual. I got acquainted with Ivona in the casting for another project and the role of Catherine sat down immediately,” Cieslar said.
Language Authenticity
The filmmakers paid close attention to ensuring the language authenticity of Catherine’s character. Cieslar explained that even though bakovic is not Czech, they worked to minimize the impact of dubbing. “She tried to play most of her replicas in front of the camera in Czech so that Beata Kaňoková could speak to her in Postsynchrony as faithfully as possible,” Cieslar said.
More Than Just a Backdrop
The film explores the courage required to love despite pain. The theme of surrogate motherhood is not merely a backdrop but a driving force in the storyline, significantly impacting the relationship’s dynamics.
Director’s Personal Connection
Cieslar also revealed a personal connection to the character of Albert. “Albert is close to me,he is an artist, finds himself at a crossroads and addresses her relationship with my mother,” Cieslar said. “It allowed me to reflect my feelings without any ambition to make an autobiographical film. The character has a lot of autobiographical features, but it’s not my story.”
