President Donald Trump was safely evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday, April 25, 2026, following a shooting outside the ballroom of the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that a suspect charged a security checkpoint at the hotel and exchanged gunfire with officers, prompting the rapid evacuation of Trump, first lady Melania Trump and other attendees. The suspect was taken into custody after the incident.

According to multiple sources, the suspect has been identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California. He was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and knives, and is believed to have acted alone.

A Secret Service agent was struck by a round during the exchange of gunfire but was wearing a bulletproof vest and is expected to recover. President Trump stated that he spoke with the officer afterward, who was in “high spirits,” and expressed his gratitude for the agent’s service.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that agents swiftly subdued the alleged shooter, and a long gun and shell casings were recovered at the scene. The suspect will face arraignment on at least two charges on Monday, April 27, 2026, as stated by U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro.

Investigators revealed that the shotgun used by Allen was purchased in August 2025, and he also owned a semiautomatic pistol acquired in 2023. Law enforcement sources noted that Allen earned a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills, in 2025, after completing his undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering at the California Institute of Technology in 2017.

President Trump returned to the White House following the evacuation and held a news briefing, during which he praised the response of law enforcement and urged national unity, saying, “We have to resolve our differences.” He also expressed deep appreciation for the courage shown by officers during the incident.

The White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner is an annual gathering of journalists, politicians, and public figures. The 2026 event was underway at the time of the shooting, which prompted widespread concern due to its historical significance, including the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan at the same venue.

Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the attack. As of Sunday, April 26, 2026, the suspect remains in custody, and no further details about potential accomplices or ideological motivations have been officially confirmed.
