WHO Prequalifies First Tuberculosis Diagnostic Test
WHO Prequalifies Groundbreaking TB Test, Boosting Global Fight Against Deadly Disease
Geneva, Switzerland – In a major victory for global health, the World Health organization (WHO) has granted prequalification to Xpert® MTB/RIF Ultra, a revolutionary molecular diagnostic test for tuberculosis (TB). This marks the frist time a TB diagnostic test has met WHO’s rigorous prequalification standards, paving the way for wider access to faster, more accurate TB detection and treatment.
Tuberculosis,a leading infectious disease killer, claims over a million lives each year, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries. Early and accurate diagnosis, particularly for drug-resistant strains, is crucial in curbing the spread of this deadly disease.
“This prequalification is a critical milestone in WHO’s efforts to ensure countries have access to high-quality TB diagnostic tools,” said Dr. Yukiko Nakatani, WHO Assistant director-General for Access to Medicines and Health Products. “It underscores the importance of these groundbreaking diagnostic tools in addressing one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases.”
The Xpert® MTB/RIF Ultra test, designed for use on the GeneXpert® Instrument System, detects the genetic material of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium responsible for TB, in sputum samples.

Delivering results within hours, the test concurrently identifies mutations associated with rifampicin resistance, a key indicator of multidrug-resistant TB. this rapid turnaround time allows for quicker initiation of appropriate treatment, improving patient outcomes and reducing the risk of further transmission.
“High-quality diagnostic tests are the cornerstone of effective TB care and prevention,” emphasized Dr.Rogerio Gaspar,WHO Director for Regulation and Prequalification. “Prequalification ensures equitable access to cutting-edge technologies, empowering countries to tackle the dual burden of TB and drug-resistant TB.”
The WHO is actively evaluating seven additional TB tests, further expanding diagnostic options and strengthening the global fight against this devastating disease.
A Game Changer in TB Diagnostics: An Exclusive Interview with Dr. Rogerio Gaspar
NewsDirectory3.com: The WHO’s recent prequalification of the Xpert® MTB/RIF Ultra test is being hailed as a major breakthrough in the fight against tuberculosis. Dr. Rogerio Gaspar, WHO Director for Regulation and Prequalification, joins us today to discuss the significance of this achievement.
Dr. Gaspar, thank you for taking the time to speak with us.
Dr. Gaspar: It’s a pleasure to be here.
NewsDirectory3.com:
Could you elaborate on what makes the Xpert® MTB/RIF Ultra test so meaningful?
Dr. gaspar: this test represents a major advance in tuberculosis diagnostics. It’s the first TB diagnostic test to meet WHO’s stringent prequalification standards. What sets it apart is its speed and accuracy. It can detect the presence of tuberculosis bacteria in sputum samples within hours, and concurrently identify mutations associated with rifampicin resistance, a key indicator of multidrug-resistant TB.This rapid turnaround time allows for quicker initiation of appropriate treatment, significantly improving patient outcomes and reducing the risk of further transmission.
NewsDirectory3.com:
How will this prequalification impact access to TB testing, especially in low- and middle-income countries?
Dr. Gaspar: Prequalification acts as a stamp of quality assurance, assuring countries that the test meets international standards. This opens doors for wider procurement and use, particularly in resource-limited settings were TB is most prevalent.
NewsDirectory3.com:
The WHO is actively evaluating several other TB tests. Can you shed some light on those efforts?
Dr. Gaspar: absolutely. We are currently evaluating seven additional TB tests. Our commitment is to expand diagnostic options and provide countries with a range of tools to effectively tackle the global TB epidemic.
NewsDirectory3.com:
What message do you have for the global community in light of this recent prequalification?
Dr. Gaspar: This is a testament to the power of innovation and collaboration. We must remain steadfast in our commitment to research, development, and equitable access to life-saving technologies. Together, we can turn the tide against tuberculosis.
