What is EIOS?
The World Health Organization (WHO) launched version 2.0 of its Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources (EIOS) system on october 14, 2025. EIOS is a globally utilized platform for the early detection of public health threats, leveraging publicly available information. Originally developed in 2017,the system now supports over 110 Member States and approximately 30 organizations and networks worldwide (WHO, 2025).
The updated system incorporates new data sources and improved functionalities, notably the integration of artificial intelligence (AI). This upgrade aims to provide public health teams with the tools to detect and respond to potential threats in near real-time by analyzing vast amounts of publicly accessible data (WHO, 2025).
“Today, we are not just celebrating the launch of a new version of a system, we are entering a new phase in how the world collaborates, innovates and responds to health threats,” stated Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Program (WHO, 2025). He further described EIOS 2.0 as “our bridge to the future: more open, more agile and more inclusive.”
The Importance of Early Detection
recent global health emergencies – including the COVID-19 pandemic, mpox, and avian influenza outbreaks – have underscored the critical importance of early detection in preventing outbreaks from escalating into widespread crises. The COVID-19 pandemic, such as, demonstrated how delays in recognizing and responding to the initial outbreak in Wuhan, China, allowed the virus to spread globally (Brookings Institution, 2023). EIOS 2.0 aims to mitigate such risks by providing a more robust and timely warning system.
With version 2.0, public health experts are better equipped to quickly identify emerging health threats and monitor ongoing events, considering factors like conflict, climate change, and the emergence of new and re-emerging pathogens. This proactive approach is crucial for minimizing the impact of future health emergencies.
Advanced features of EIOS 2.0
version 2.0 represents the most significant upgrade to the EIOS technology as its inception. key
